Goodness me, this is just far too good from the Top 14 team. Ex-Bath full-back Nick Abendanon is at the heart of it again for Clermont, breezing through the Northampton defence and setting up Wesley Fofana for a simple finish. Just outstanding.

Brock James' conversion is good too and, if you're a Saints fan, you best look away now.

We already know Clermont can play, but their pack is really doing the business here too, winning a penalty at the set-piece. Brock James goes to touch. Clermont go in search of more points.

Former Northampton Saints team manager and player Lennie Newman: "Northampton are on the ropes. They are not putting up any resistance. It will be a difficult conversation at half-time if they can't get any points on the board. The Saints are creating their own problems. Lee Dixon is getting the ball at the back of the base but he's kicking it almost in the middle of the field and giving it to Clermont. It's just not good enough."

Samu Manoa does excellently to gather Stephen Myler's restart and get Northampton moving. Clermont have knocked on in the aftermath too - can they get themselves on the scoreboard before half-time?

This has been a brutal, brutal opening 30 minutes from Clermont, who are in danger of completely running away with the second quarter-final.

Nick Abendanon's mini-break gets the French side moving, before Wesley Fofana skips past another tackle to get them in behind the Saints defence. Can they work quick ball? Yes they can - and it's left to Brock James to tee up Noa Nakaitaci for his second try.

The fly-half's conversion is good too and this has been one-way traffic.

Former Northampton Saints team manager and player Lennie Newman: "You have to take the sting out of this rampant Clermont side. The Saints need to say to themselves 'come on boys, we need to dig deep'. Clermont have definitely got the upper hand at the scrum."

  8. Penaltypublished at 18:15 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

The Australian looks in fine knick again, splitting the posts and sending Clermont into a 13-point lead. The home side have been much the better team and deserve their advantage.

But it's Northampton's turn to infringe, Salesi Ma'afu the guilty party that time. Can Brock James land another penalty? It looks far from easy, 10 metres in from the right-hand touchline.

Again Clermont Auvergne look dangerous, as try-scorer Noa Nakaitaci picks out his fellow wing Napolioni Nalaga down the right-hand side. But the Fijian knocks on and Saints will have another put-in at scrum time. A let off.

That's brilliant from full-back Nick Abendanon, skipping and hopping his way around two tackles having picked up deep inside his own half and setting Clermont on their way to a counter-attacking counter attack, if there is such a thing.

Clermont Auvergne have certainly played most of the rugby in this opening quarter and again they're going through the phases, working their way into the Northampton half. But it's dropped by Vincent Debaty and they'll have to start all over again.

  14. Missed penaltypublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

But the England fly-half can't land the kick and the deficit remains 10 points. Those may need to go over if Northampton are going to stay in touch.

  15. Postpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

That's excellent from Calum Clark, whose hustling at the breakdown has earned Northampton a penalty. This is certainly within Stephen Myler's range...

Former Northampton Saints team manager and player Lennie Newman: "What do Northampton need to do? Simple. Score any points - just get that clock ticking over."

  17. Trypublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

It looked good in real time and the replays showed much the same. The original break from fleet-footed centre Wesley Fofana did most of the damage, but it's a terrific finish by Noa Nakaitaci too, bouncing off one challenge and forcing his way over.

The conversion from Brock James is straightforward too, and this looks ominous for the Premiership side.

  18. Try reviewpublished at 17:59 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

Now, Clermont look like they've gone over here, but we're heading to the television match official. Was it a double movement from Noa Nakaitaci?

  19. Postpublished at 17:58 British Summer Time 4 April 2015

That's exquisite from Brock James, whose radar looks bang on in the early stages. His kick finds touch little more than three or four metres from the Northampton line and, although the visitors' set-piece is good, Stephen Myler's clearance is rushed and now Clermont are on the attack.

Luke:, external Not optimistic about this game. If it was in England I'd think Saints would win. Seven years is a long time to be undefeated.
