"Wales have arrived, marching through the gates under the gaze of the golden lions to chants of 'Wales . . . Wales . . . Wales' in one of rugby's enduring traditions.

"Wales will not be short of support, but with only two wins in 30 matches against the Springboks, they will need it."

South Africa v Wales (16:00 BST)

How things could have been so different...

The story goes that in 2007, England approached Warren Gatland to interview for the newly created position of elite director of rugby.

According to theTelegraph,, externalGatland flew out to Sydney for the interview but ended up withdrawing because he did not want a desk job.

A year later and the Kiwi joined Wales and the rest, as they say, is history... Grand Slams, Six Nations titles, and helping knock England out of their own tournament.

Former Springbok lock Kobus Wiese has been telling Radio Wales about the impact South Africa's defeat against Japan had on the country.

"It was a great start to the tournament for Japan but not for us, so much as that we won't eat sushi for a 100 years," said the man who runs a chain of fish restaurants back home.

"But the improvement among the smaller countries in this World Cup is great for the game of rugby."

And today's game? "I'm expecting a huge encounter between two countries who love the game. This is the best South African team [coach] Heyneke Meyer could put on the field."

  7. 'Not a contest for the soft-hearted'published at 14:39

    Tom Fordyce
    Chief sports writer at Twickenham

"Grey old afternoon in south-west London as autumn proper rears its head after four sun-smeared weeks, but Twickenham's concrete skirts a mess of bright red and stern green as kick-off approaches.

"Plenty of nips and slurps being taken in advance, not least for Dutch courage - this is unlikely to be a contest for the weak-kneed or soft-hearted."

Ford & Gray cleared to play

Here's some good news for Scotland - hooker Ross Ford and lock Jonny Gray have been cleared to play in Sunday's quarter-final against Australia.

The pair had been suspended for three weeks but have been successful in their appeals.

They were given the bans for dangerous tackles during Saturday's 36-33 Pool B victory over Samoa.

"There are lots of Welsh fans milling around Twickenham, and you can't blame them for looking at home - this is Wales' third game in 21 days at the home of England rugby.

South African fans are the ones taking pictures in front of the lineout statue outside the stadium, because this is the Springboks' first visit during this tournament.

Last week when Wales tackled Australia in Pool A there was a second chance - today, it's a knockout. No mistakes, no second chances. It's win or go home. And nobody - South African or Welsh - wants to leave this party."

Wales' defence were magnificent against Australia last Saturday. Had their attack been as resourceful they might have won that encounter and avoided this last eight clash with two-time champions South Africa. But life's full of ifs, buts and maybes, as they say.

Today's question is: Can Shaun Edwards conjure a master play to stop South Africa's game-breaker Bryan Habana from becoming the tournament's top try scorer?

The winger needs one more try to stand alone as the leading try scorer in World Cup history. He's currently tied with All Black great Jonah Lomu on 15.

Cardiff has already hosted a mighty celebration this week as Wales' football players progressed to the European Championships finals.

Gareth Bale, the world's most expensive footballer and Sam Warburton's former school mate, has sent a good luck message to his compatriots. We'll not mention the Real player's outfit...

"I wish you all the best, I'm sure you'll do everyone proud and we'll all be cheering for you back home," says the Real Madrid forward in his message, which you can watch by clicking here.

How about some mid-afternoon stats? Wales fly-half Dan Biggar has the tournament's best kicking percentage (from players who have had more than 10 shots at goal).

Biggar has missed with just one kick at goal from 16 shots, which came in Saturday's defeat by Australia.
