    South Africa 18-20 New Zealand

So there we have it. Reigning champions New Zealand are into their fourth World Cup final after edging past South Africa in another epic. It wasn't always pretty, but it was always gripping. You can read the match report by clicking here.

Be prepared for more tension, but perhaps more tries, on Sunday as Australia take on Argentina for an opportunity to meet the defending champs in the final. There will be live commentary of that match from us tomorrow, and according to the forecast it will be a dry day in the Big Smoke.

Thanks, as always, for joining us. In the meantime, Tom Fordyce has written about Argentina's rugby revolution which will make for pleasant prep before the semi-final.

When losing in the possession and territory stats, you need to defend like your lives depend on it. South Africa did that, but eventually ran out of steam as the All Blacks - who enjoyed an easier passage into the last four - finally wore them down.

Bryan Habana will have to shake off the disappointment of missing out on the final because there's a third-place play-off to be won next Friday.

"We let ourselves down in some areas in the second half, but full credit to New Zealand for keeping possession with 14 men," he adds. "They are world class and deserve to be in the final. Hopefully we can do ourselves proud on Friday."

  7. 'We had discipline issues'published at 18:30

More from Bryan Habana: "Words cannot describe it, I’m hurt for mates who've become brothers. Give the All Blacks credit, we had a few discipline issues and with a man down to restrict us from scoring, they showed their status as the number one side in the world."

  8. 'Guts, character, tenacity...'published at 18:29

Bryan Habana has had better games. The winger was at fault for New Zealand's first try, foolishly charged Dan Carter's conversion, which allowed the outside-half a second bite at the cherry, and was also sin binned.

Speaking to ITV Sport, the winger said: "Bitterly disappointed but unbelievably proud of this journey the team’s been on since Japan. We showed guts, character and tenacity, as a proud player we could not have asked for more."

The pair should share a beer together after the match if they are to continue their post-match tradition. Steve Hansen will be buying the beers.

    South Africa 18-20 New Zealand

New Zealand have now won 11 of the last 13 Tests against South Africa, which is phenomenal considering the Springboks have regularly been the second best team on the planet for the majority of that time.

If South Africa want a consolation stat, here's the only one I could find - they're still the only side Julian Savea has not scored a try against. Hey, I didn't say it would make the Springboks feel better.

New Zealand centre Conrad Smith on ITV1: "We knew South Africa would give us a different game - and it turned out that way. South Africa played really well, put us under pressure and didn't give us much. We had to dig deep and I'm proud of that."

On what the All Blacks players discussed on the Twickenham pitch before the second half: "We were pretty composed, a lot of us were talking about what we were expecting. It would have been nice to be winning by 20 points but that doesn't always happen.

"Good teams have to come from behind sometimes and we talked about getting up the ground quicker and playing the ball a bit sharper. We executed that really well in the second half."

New Zealand did most of the running - literally. The All Blacks made 398 metres over the 80 minutes, twice as much distance as the Springboks' tally of 146m. That means, unsurprisingly, the top five individual metre-makers were all wearing black shirts.

  16. 'We weren't good enough'published at 18:14

    South Africa 18-20 New Zealand

South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer speaking to ITV Sport: "We're very disappointed, we believed we were good enough to beat them but we just weren't. We wanted to make our country proud and we didn't.

"Discipline is the most important thing, especially in the rain, but we are making no excuses because we should have pulled this one through.

"The All Blacks are a quality side, I want to thank all the people that followed us and I'm just sorry if we let them down."

Dan Carter's surprise drop-goal early in the second half seemed to swing things New Zealand's way, dragging his team to within two points of the two-time champions and giving them extra energy.

It was only Carter's second drop-goal in a World Cup match. Indeed, it's a weapon that's hardly been used in this tournament at all, with only six successful droppers. The lowest previous drop-goal tally was 14 in 2007.

Oof, that was a close match. Only one previous World Cup semi-final has seen a closer points difference at the final whistle, and that was France's encounter with Wales in 2011, which the French won 9-8.
