South Africa in prime position, a line-out on the All Blacks' 22m... but the men in black drive them backwards. South Africa are on their heels and on a grey and damp afternoon in Twickenham they lose possession. That felt inevitable.

South Africa have 10 minutes to nick this. Have they got anything left in the tank? The Springboks' defence has been pumped by the All Blacks. Energy-sapping...

Oh my word. For a moment, the play was in slow motion as Dan Carter chased a well-placed Pat Lambie kick. Three South Africans were breathing down on the outside-half, one of them JP Pietersen, but Carter scrambled a kick to touch just in time. Had he missed it would have been a try. Tense times. Ten minutes remaining. I'm not sure I can watch.

Replacement Pat Lambie eyes up the task in front of him, a kick to the right of the uprights, about 35m out, and he treats it as if it were a routine training ground practice session. Between the posts it sails. Two points in it.

Under 15 minutes to go and the All Blacks now shuffle their line-up. Keven Mealamu one of the men to be introduced, Jerome Kaino one of the men to depart.

On the field, South Africa have won a penalty, Kieran Read coming through from the side of the maul which South Africa have formed from their line-out. The number eight purses his lips.

Bryan Habana may feel he owes his team-mates after his stretch in the sin-bin left them disadvantaged for a vital 10-minute spell. The All Blacks used their extra man to rack up possession and territory, although they failed to stretch their five-point lead in Habana's absence.

A raft of changes to South Africa's original line-up, Schalke Burger is off, as is Handre Pollard, who seemed to be injured. Replacement Patrick Lambie will now conduct operations from the number 10 position.

Dreamy quick line-out ball from the All Blacks and their backline are purring. Dan Carter to Sonny Bill Williams inside the Boks' 22m... the dual-code international with a grubber but there's a touch too much adrenaline on that one as Bryan Habana, back from his sin bin, sweeps up and touches down for a 22 drop-out.

South Africa are still in the game, it doesn't take much now they are back to 15, but they are tiring."

South Africa have got nothing left, they have run out of steam and direction. They might go for penalties, but they've got no direction."

And the records books are not only being rewritten on the 'Foreign players at Twickenham' page.

As Opta say, that successful penalty means Carter overtakes Grant Fox's tally of 170 points to become New Zealand's all-time World Cup scorer.

Sonny Bill Williams is now on the field. What has he got in his box of tricks? We must wait, because South Africa have formed a brutal driving maul, they're prepared to gain territory blade by blade.

The backs finally see the ball, Handre Pollard attempts to dance through a black brick wall. The crowd wince in unison, which says it all... South Africa retaining possession, though.

Silly from Eben Etzebeth, failing to stay on his feet at the breakdown and gifting Dan Carter a kick at the posts. The outside-half is rock solid and has now scored more points than former All Black Grant Fox at a World Cup.

New Zealand's scrum threatening to fold like a deckchair in the wind. Kieran Read attempts to rescue the situation at the base, but the number eight knocks on.

South Africa now with put-in at the scrum...  eight giant green forwards generate enough power to sustain a small island, All Blacks retreating, and Jeromes Garces toots his whistle.

Handre Pollard with the three points.

The bench makes such a difference, I've been amazed South Africa have not brought many changes on up to now. But, hopefully, it's not too late."
