"Well it was coming. England were patient. There were several good carries there. That's the sort of thing the coaches are looking for now to compete with the southern hemisphere - players who can do more than their core job. Jack Nowell had enough gas to get round and to the line."

"That was the first time England had some continuity. They had the players over, and they made it count. It's going to be very, very difficult for Scotland now."

    Oh my.

All Black prop Joe Moody lit up the World Cup with a deft bit of handling and Mako Vunipola has just shown his own silky-soft bit of skill.

The replacement prop flips a ball back inside to Saracens team-mate Owen Farrell creating the space for Jack Nowell to weasel in to the corner past a despairing Stuart Hogg.

Farrell misses from out wide with the conversion.

Scotland drag down a rolling maul just as England are beginning to get out of first gear.

Owen Farrell lines it up with his trademark side-eye stance, but his penalty from a difficult angle is a whisker wide.

AS: What has happened to George Ford? Badly out of form and clearly not just the Bath environment.

Andy: England getting cleaned out at the breakdown, despite having Robshaw and Haskell in the backrow. Who knew?

Adrian Sheppard: Scotland are getting the ball out faster than us, Why are we not getting over the ball.

Dan Cole gives away a dead-headed penalty, thundering into Jonny Gray around the fringes of the ruck right under the nose of referee John Lacey.

That is the eighth or ninth given away by England so far in the match.

Sir Clive used to set them an upper limit of 10. They are going to struggle to stay south of that today.

"You saw Dylan Hartley run in-field and applaud his team-mates. After a terrible restart Scotland should be disappointed they didn't come away with anything from that but England kept their discipline."

England's defence holds out after their failure to claim the kick-off puts them right under the cosh.

Martin Robson: Easily an even game but too many pens given away by England.

Kieron Bird: Scotland got stronger as that half went on. England got messier as mistakes crept in. Eddie will be pleased it's half-time.

Paul McMenemy: Pantomime villain Dylan Hartley has had a reasonable start to his captaincy. 'Oh no he hasn't.'
