Ireland captain Rory Best: “We knew it was going to be unbelievably tough going and would take a massive physical performance to win here. But we dug deep to get that win, there are a lot of very tired boys in the Irish dressing room.

"If we’d sat back [after CJ Stander’s sending off] and kept giving them the ball, they would have kept coming at us and we would have run out of steam, so we had to take the ball to them.”

Michael Moran: Unbelievable performance from Ireland with only 14 men for such a long period of the game. Superb!

Michael Griffiths: Wow!!! What a day of rugby, new dawn for the northern hemisphere!!!

    South Africa 20-26 Ireland

What a performance by Ireland, one of their most famous - their first victory on South African soil and they did it playing with 14 men for 60 minutes, following CJ Stander's red card. Remarkable. Although, you have to say, new-look South Africa looked a lot like old-look South Africa, except worse.

    South Africa 20-26 Ireland

The hooter sounds as South Africa search for a try that might win it at the death... Whitely almost through, tackled round the ankles by Murray... Pietersen almost in in the right-hand corner... what a tackle! It's going upstairs, but I don't think he got that down... he didn't get it down, what a victory for Ireland!

South Africa lose the ball in the tackle, Jackson dives on it as if it's a priceless Faberge egg, the referee calls the scrum as the clock ticks into the red...

Murray with the Garryowen, South Africa inch into the Irish half... Kriel to Pietersen, but it's a poor pass and the winger knocks on. Given Ireland have had only 14 players for most of the match and are missing a stack of first-team regulars, this is just as embarrassing for South Africa as the defeat by Japan at the World Cup. But not done yet...

    South Africa 20-26 Ireland

Le Roux tries to make something happen, he's looked like South Africa's most lively player all day. Penalty Ireland, Malherbe off his feet again, Jackson with the chance to almost kill things... and he has, straight through the middle...

    South Africa 20-23 Ireland

Jackson with a drop-goal attempt and he slices it wide, that was very makeable. Horribly tense out there. Strauss on a rumble but there's not much flair out there at the moment and Ireland have turned it over yet again. Jackson clears, Le Roux underneath it... South Africa raid down the left but Nyakane is dragged into touch, tremendous cover defence again...

Oh dear, Jackson with the risky pass in his own 22 and replacement lock Du Toit latches onto it and dives under the sticks. Conversion kicked, lead cut to three points.

    South Africa 13-23 Ireland

Penalty South Africa, Jantjies finds a solid touch. But Ireland have it again and Henshaw almost wriggles through... penalty Ireland, and Jackson is going to have a go. This could be terminal for South Africa, they've been pretty awful today, it has to be said... Jackson nails it...

    South Africa 13-20 Ireland

Etzebeth knocks on, this is getting critical for South Africa now, they're incontinent with mistakes at the moment. Ireland put-in, collapses, put-in again... Best receiving treatment, gets patched up, we go again... Ireland swing it left, Henshaw kicks through, full-back Le Roux fumbles it into touch...

    South Africa 13-20 Ireland

Unbelievable stuff from Ireland, South Africa turned over again. Ross off for Furlong in the Irish front row, Nyakane on for Mtawarira in the South African front row. Ireland penalty as new man Nyakane is pinged for illegal scrummaging, Jackson having a stab from halfway... fine effort but it hits an upright...

Ireland nick it again at the breakdown, although that was a naughty from Best, using his feet. South Africa butcher another chance down the left flank, poor execution but stirring defence. Anxious faces in the Springbok coaching booth, this is not going to plan...

Jantjies has got some boot and here's a South African line-out on the Ireland 10m. Etzebeth with another fine line-out take, a couple of charges down the middle, then they go wide... Pietersen spots half a gap, can't wriggle through it... De Jager hauled down just short... Toner turns it over, Jackson clears. Wonderful defence by Ireland.

If South Africa can't get themselves out of this, they will get crucified - as will new coach Allister Coetzee. Just no fluency to their play at the moment...

Murphy with a fine pass to Earls, who slides past a couple before kicking through... Ireland playing very well despite being one man down and here comes Jackson with the step, chip and chase! Brilliant cover from scrum-half De Klerk, saving a certain try.

Ireland get a push on, at least they're back to 14 now, Henshaw out of the bin. Blimey, Ireland look like they've scored, Murray going over. There was a knock-on earlier in the piece, but it was by a South African, and the try stands. Jackson adds the conversion.
