The scoreline tells the story - almost.

Australia butchered two golden chances and Bernard Foley - perfect in every other respect - missed two routine conversions.

It will take something extraordinary for Wales to get back into this after the break. But those missed chances mean the Wallabies are not quite out of sight.

Dave Sommerville: Why do Wales kick for lineout from free kicks giving possession to the other side? When has that ever worked for anyone?

Nick Hughes: Good Lord Wales are awful. Their tactics are so basic and this is an average Australia side. From an English view, what a shame

    Wales 3-20 Australia

Australia are lobbing the ball around like it is a seaside game of sevens.

Rhys Webb is gratefully to be able to boot the ball clean over his dead-ball line to bring the half to an end.

This has been a horror show of a performance for the hosts so far and they depart the scene to near silence.

Australia could be out of sight. Wales are still in this game. They need to regroup and come back in the second half.

    A bit of aerial ping-pong.

Wales scrum-half Rhys Webb makes a quarter break on his own 22 metre line.

Scott Sio crashes up in midfield for Australia.

    The half-time whistle looms.

It is the awareness of the crucial play-makers from Australia. It was a brilliant finish from Kuridrani.

  9. try

Wales 3-20 Australia (Tevita Kuridrani, con Bernard Foley)

The Wales defence has all the structural integrity of a wet paper bag.

Bernard Foley injects pace, coming onto the ball fast at first receiver and is met only by indecision.

A dummy runner fixes the defence, Foley spins wide and Tevita Kuridrani barges over with a little dummy into the bargain.

This is underwhelming from a Welsh point of view.

Ian Funnell: Next year's Lions could have a much more prominent English look given how poor Wales are looking against an average Aussie team.

That is a bad miss for Leigh Halfpenny. He is usually metronomic.

    Better from Wales.

They finally get their mitts on the ball. Australia have had a monopoly on possession until now.

And it is not long before Australia infringe with Sekope Kepu getting the wrong side.

It should be meat and drink for a kicker of the quality of Leigh Halfpenny.

But he pushes it a little wide.

    The irony.

Wales didn't concede when they were a man down and Biggar comes back on and immediately they concede.

It was just a simple inside ball, and the Wales defence gets lazy. Australia targeted Samson Lee, one of the props, and he can't get there. Brilliant play from Australia.

    It was a deserved try.

  16. try

    Trypublished at 26 mins

    Wales 3-13 Australia (Hodge)

Finally the pressure tells on Wales defence.

Another precisely-plotted inside line, hit at full pace from Reece Hodge bursts the Wales defence.

Israel Folau is in support and takes a pass, draws the man and then flips it back to Hodge to allow him to stroll over.

Bernard Foley misses the extras. Dan Biggar returns and Wales are back up to a full set.

I don't think I have seen as many line breaks from a southern hemisphere team and no points scored from it.

If Shaun Edwards did have hair he would be pulling it out.

You have to give credit to Wales' scramble defence but I don't think from a coach's point of view you want to be seeing it used so often.

    Wales 3-8 Australia

This is too easy for Australia, however well they are playing.

Nick Phipps darts and goes from the back of a scrum, Reece Hodge picks a line and slices Wales clean open off his scrum-half's pop pass.

Only a clincal tackle from Leigh Halfpenny bails out Wales.

Defence coach Shaun Edwards will be reading his team the riot act at half-time.
