    England 9-9 France

France deploy the dark arts as England creep to within five metres.

There are hands in rucks, tacklers hanging onto the man and a very loose interpretation of the offside line.

Referee Angus Gardner keeps his cards in his pocket, but awards the penalty.

I think England have got an opportunity in attack once they hit into midfield, get the ball back in George Ford's hands and get to the outside edge.

I think they will get some change there. England double hit and get into the outside channel.

    England 9-9 France

France are committing numbers and energy to the breakdown and England's forwards are not doing the basics well enough.

The ball is scrappy and slow for England scrum-half Ben Youngs.

    Oomph!

Owen Farrell - who was shrugged off by Scott Spedding a few minutes earlier - lands a big shoulder on Louis Picamoles as the France number eight attempts to run the ball back from deep.

    Courageous and effective.

    England 9-9 France

That French front-row change-up seems to have done the trick.

Slimani and Chiocci send the England front row north and the referee awards the penalty the visitors' way.

Baptiste Serin gives Dan Cole some consolatory words as they two packs part, sparking some shove and point.

    Gotta love scrum-halves.

Meer Shah: Picamoles helps France pick-a-hole in between the English defence for Spedding to speed through and attack.

Small Man Peaky: It seems like France only ever turn up for the England games...

  8. Replacementpublished at 48 mins

    England 9-9 France

France have freshened up the front row with Rabah Slimani and Xavier Chiocci in on the prop slots.

Maybe that is an attempt to keep ref Angus Gardner sweet...

Brilliant, brilliant delayed ball from George Ford who shaped up to kick for the corner. Owen Farrell found a beautiful line.

It's been seven minutes of quality for England because they have been precise, they have been accurate.

They have just changed their plan - this is the England side we saw in 2016, no doubt about it.

    England 9-9 France

Elliot Daly dives over in the corner after a magical delayed pass from George Ford puts Owen Farrell through a gaping hole in midfield.

    Has Daly stayed infield? No!

The video replay shows that Noa Nakaitaci has just about managed to force him out of play.

That's a great hit from Courtney Lawes. Baptiste Serin held on to the ball and Courtney floored him.

    England 9-9 France

Baptiste Serin is dumper-trucked flat on his back by Courtney Lawes, the ball spills forward and England boot downfield.

    Here comes Scott Spedding through.

A massive hand-off from the France full-back lands Owen Farrell with a slice of palm pie.

Some strong running from wing Virimi Vakatawa in that break downfield.

Louis Picamoles is getting in on the act, thighs pumping like pistons.

Uini Atonio thumps up the centre.

    France up to within five.

This period of Eddie Jones' reign, England do tend to come out well. They have good analysis.

Maybe there is a cool, calm head and a bit more of a pragmatic approach at half-time.

Owen Farrell's kick bounces off the upright and loose.

    And France counter with interest...

I would imagine Eddie Jones is furious at that line-out because England were just not ready and that's just not good enough.

  18. Kick-offpublished at 17:52 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    England 9-9 France

    Cleanly taken by England.

An early bit of adventure as they spin the ball wide, Elliot Daly drills a low, grubbing kick ahead. That rolls out of play around the France 22m.

They attempt a quick line-out, but that is not straight.

And now the France pack have been shoving early at scrum-time.

Brainless. And Owen Farrell is lining up a shot at the sticks...

England come trotting out at a lick, perhaps pleased to escape Eddie Jones' half-time debrief.

France to get us back up and running. Camille Lopez is whispering his kick-off plans to his troops.
