Scotland coach Vern Cotter: "When there was one point in it i think everyone thought it would be the same old story but we managed to claw our way back in.

"It was a great win and validates the work they have been doing in training.

"These players are finding ways to win games now - we dominated the first half and they largely dominated second but we held our composure at the end.

"I might have a quiet beer with with my old friend Joe Schmidt [they coached together at Clermont] having finally gotten one over on him."

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt: "Scotland got a flying start, really impressive, and Vern Cotter has obviously done some great work with them.

"That line-out play, we were a bit passive and naive and that was disappointing. At the same time I felt we clawed our way back into the game, got ahead and had a few good chances to put the game away.

"When you don't you are always at risk of them coming back and maybe getting something at the end of it."

Attitude wise, Ireland were a bit off the pace. Sometimes your brain just isn't up to speed. That was them today.

Scotland didn't think, at any point, that they were going to lose this.

Maddy Richards: What a game. Get in Scotland!!!!

Aaron Evans: Hogg class act...but not as solid as Williams or Brown defensively!! Not a lion starter yet!!

Bev Hendry: Scotland the Brave indeed ! What a match, what a win!

The game's top six tacklers were all Scottish - it was heroic defence that won the day after that initial first-half try blitz: Jonny Gray (28), Ryan Wilson (18), Richie Gray (17), Hamish Watson (16), Ross Ford and Zander Fagerson (15).

Scotland captain Greg Laidlaw: "I think you can hear what it means to this crowd.

"Hearing the National Anthem at the start in this stadium - thats what it's all about.

"Coach Vern sat us down earlier this week and told us we were going to win it because we are bloody minded.

"You can tell we are over the moon today with this result.

"I'll just listen to Vern - whatever he says goes."

It will be a bitter pill to swallow for Ireland after wrestling the momentum back in your favour, scoring tries, getting back in the lead.

A little bit of game management towards the end let them down a bit. I said if Ireland come here and lose but get a bonus point it is not the end of the world, you still have to win the rest of your matches, but it is not over.

You have to be a realist, and say there was a lot of bad stuff out there as well.

Greig Laidlaw is next up to the post-match interview microphone.

Sonja McLaughlan tells the Scotland captain that it is the first time since 2006 that his team have won their Six Nations opener.

    The crowd roar in response.

"To get results like that, to hear the crowd singing the national anthem, that is what it is all about," he replies.

    Quite.

  15. 'Our start cost us'published at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 4 February 2017

    Scotland 27-22 Ireland

Ireland captain Rory Best: "Ultimately the way we started cost us. We knew they were a quality outfit and started with a lot of emotion momentum and we were not good enough to stop it.

"We fought back well to get into the lead, but if you start like that away from home in the Six Nations you are always going to be up against it.

"We made a few uncharacteristic errors, didn't execute the way we wanted to and weren't good enough from a couple of line-outs.

"They seemed to score every time they touched the ball at one point. We are hugely disappointed that when we took the lead we weren't able to close it out."

Man of the Match Stuart Hogg: That was a cracking game. We switched off a bit in the start of the second half but the boys are delighted with that result and a great way to kick off the Six Nations here at Murrayfield.

The boys stuck to it but credit to Ireland - they were fantastic in the second half.

Scoring two tries is great but I was put in very good positions by our team and we have excellent backs - I ended up in the right place at the right time.

What a win, what a performance, what a result for Scotland. They came into this as underdogs but with real hope in what the squad was capable of.

The second half they were under huge pressure, but have ridden the storm.
