Both sides are going hammer and tongs in a mammoth passage of play.

    Defences tiring, space opening up.

There is a knock-on and Nigel Owens takes the chance to review the footage of Uini Atonio clearing out Sean O'Brien over a ruck.

It looks like a neck roll, albeit a half-hearted one.

Penalty Ireland and a chance to clear up towards France's 22m.

    Ireland v France

Ireland are dominating the scoreboard, they are dominating the key stats.

As the clock ticks into the final quarter, the home side continue to enjoy the majority of possession.

And the French are being pinned back in their own half. Over 75% of the game has been played in the visitors' half.

Conor Murray with a delicious side-foot nudge down into the corner, brushes the flag and forces new France hooker Christopher Tolofua to throw into a line-out in the shadow of his own posts.

    Tolofua hits his man.

It's been a really exciting contest, although there is no question that it has been riddled with errors from both sides.

Johnny Sexton has recovered from a sneaky late shoulder from former Racing team-mate Eddy Ben Arous.

A couple of changes off the bench though for Ireland.

Iain Henderson is on in place of Donnacha Ryan in the second row with Cian Healy replacing Jack McGrath in the front row.

    Ireland 16-6 France

France break out from their own line as Louis Picamoles turns over the ball and Scott Spedding disappears through a hole and, thighs pumping like pistons, charges into midfield.

Keith Earls checks his momentum as he comes up from full-back. Simon Zebo clears up, spills the ball straight to Baptiste Serin.

Finally though there is a knock-forward from Bernard Le Roux and a mammoth passage of play comes to a close. Lactic pumping and oxygen masks needed all around.

BBC Sport's Richard Petrie at the Aviva Stadium: A more relaxed mood now around the Aviva as Irish supporters sense that their side are firmly in the box seat thanks to those nine points from the boot of the returning Johnny Sexton.

The Ireland fly-half defying the fact that he has only seen 130 minutes of action for Leinster since Ireland's historic win over New Zealand in Chicago on 5 November.

At the moment their discipline and fitness are fading fast and so are their hopes of victory.

Johnny Sexton gets a late and loose arm across the chest from Julien Ledevedec. Not a lot in it, but the Irish crowd roar their disapproval.

Scott Spedding has been peppered with high balls today and the French full-back has never looked comfortable.

He spills another one and Ireland have a scrum down on the France 22m with Fields of Athenry echoing around.

That is cracker of a drop goal from Sexton, especially in the conditions.

It was reminisicent of when he came onto the scene at Murrayfield all those years ago.
