    Clermont 7-12 Saracens

The Saracens defence is coming up fast and hard. None more so than Owen Farrell.

The Saracens fly-half digs his heels in and launches a massive shoulder into Remi Lamerat.

Not textbook technique, but the sheer force dislodges the ball and gives Sarries the scrum.

Remember when fly-halves were 10 stone revolving-door defensive liabilities?

Jamie George is too quick for his own good.

The Saracens hooker picks a lovely line, scything through the Clermont defence.

But his team-mates cannot keep up with him, he is isolated and robbed.

Aurelien Rougerie was likened to Jonah Lomu in his early days - he was that influential.

And I can't tell you how important that try was for the players and the crowd.

The majority of this crowd are French and they've been quiet for the opening 20 minutes.

The godfather of the Clermont backline Aurelien Rougerie gets on the outside shoulder of Chris Ashton.

So close to the Saracens tryline that is enough.

Rougerie doesn't quite make it, but midfield partner Remi Lamerat crashes over on his shoulder.

A conversion from Camille Lopez and the French side are back in the room.

Saracens hold out on this occasion. But it was all hands to the pump to keep the Clermont pack from ploughing over.

More pressure now. Clermont with the put-in to the scrum five.

Somehow Clermont have got to get over the ball and compete.

It's just too fast - too fast to commentate on and too fast to analyse.

Everything is happening at 100 miles an hour.

It's difficult to talk to, imagine how difficult that is to defend against.

I can't see any other result than a Saracens runaway victory.

  9. try

Converted try Clermont 0-12 Saracenspublished at 21 mins

    George Kruis (con Farrell)

    This is what they do.

Rugby of the highest order from Saracens, instinctive, opportunistic and error-free.

Chris Wyles wiggles through a hole to turn the defence, Alex Goode sauters into the shadow of the posts and George Kruis crosses the final two metres with a flared-nostril charge.

Former Sarries player David Strettle has put his team under even more pressure there and that shows the frustration of the Clermont players at the moment.

There was no need to go in on Richard Wigglesworth there.

No problem with him having a go from there.

It was right on the edge of his range but Owen Farrell was just giving his forwards a rest for a minute or two.

    Absolutely brilliant from Saracens.

Once the maul had collapsed and they got a penalty, they had a free shot.

And just like the red arrows, they broke into formation.

Scott Spedding only took three paces forward but that created the room for Chris Ashton to create a splash over the line.

    Chris Ashton

    Clinical from Saracens.

They spin wide and full-back Alex Goode spots that opposite number Scott Spedding has stepped up towards the defensive line, leaving a pocket of space in behind.

A slide-rule grubber is weighted to perfection.

Chris Ashton wins the foot race by a clear length and swallow-dives over.

Owen Farrell's conversion hits the post and bounces out from out wide, but Saracens have a lead to show for their good start.
