    England 47-12 USA

USA are making good ground in the England half through their forwards but Abbie Scott and Justine Lucas do well to disrupt the rolling maul and Deven Owsiany just can't get the ball out.

England back in possession as Amber Reed, now at fly-half, punts the ball down field.

USA are flinging the ball about in the backs as Naya Tapper takes the long way round, but Alev Kelter is shoved into touch.

    Time for change.

I was mid-way through a post before that try, about to apologise to you for billing this as a close clash.

England have been utterly dominant in attack but they're still partial to a leaky try or two in defence.

USA are not going down without a fight as they push England way back into their own half.

Safe hands from the women in white at the line-out though, their set-piece has been very tight so far.

But the USA are not done yet.

Full-back Cheta Emba picks the ball from the back of the ruck and dives over the line as England fail to get their defence set.

Alev Kelter misses the sticks on this occasion though.

And there it is. England have their seventh try.

This is beginning to look like a training game.

Hooker Amy Cockayne begins the move at the line-out and is there to finish it off from the drive.

    England 40-7 USA

England have another penalty - USA captain Tiffany Faaee pulled for collapsing the maul.

I suspect England won't go for the sticks here, they'll want more.

Yep, Katy Mclean goes to the corner and USA will do well to defend another driving maul here...

    England 40-7 USA

Middleton will be satisfied with the kicking in this game, it's been much better from England.

Emily Scarratt has been more clinical from the tee and Katy Mclean, back in the fly-half jersey, has controlled the game in the backs.

And just as I say that, the forwards put their hands up and turn the ball over at the breakdown.

    Praise all round then.

  8. try

Converted try - Wilson-Hardy, con Scarrattpublished at 42 mins

    England 40-7 USA

England are heading to the semi-finals.

Lovely hands from Simon Middleton's side.

Amber Reed runs a straight line as Katy Mclean pops the ball out to the centre and she feeds Amy Wilson-Hardy on the wing.

    Very crisp.

Emily Scarratt's kicking returns to normal service and she pops over the conversion.

The players are back out in the sunshine and England are 40 minutes away from a place in the semi-finals.

Just a reminder, New Zealand are already there.

The first ever Women's Rugby World Cup was held in Cardiff in 1991.

But it wasn't without it's challenges.

The organising committee, consisting of two trailblazing women, found they had no money and no support from the rugby authorities.

And when the tournament finally got off the ground, teams turned up in Wales in severe financial difficulty.

The Russians came without any money, and were forced to sell vodka on the steps of the town hall.

But the local community came to their rescue and from small beginnings, women's rugby got off the ground.

Maggie Alphonsi, a 2014 World Cup winner with England, has been to Cardiff to meet the two women behind the first ever tournament.

England may be on top in this one, but in the first ever Women's Rugby World Cup, they were beaten by USA in the final.

    The year? 1991.

Here's how that tournament came about...

  13. Five tries to onepublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    HT: England 33-7 USA

In case you're just joining us, England lead by five tries to one at half-time.

Emily Scarratt's try, a penalty try, two from Marlie Packer and Katy Mclean's score on the half-time whistle gave England a healthy lead at the break with USA crossing just once through Kate Zackary.

I said this could be a classic...but USA are being outclassed so far.

  14. Half-timepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 17 August 2017

    England 33-7 USA

England kick the ball out from the restart, they've had enough and off they trot for half-time.

That has to be their best half of rugby so far this tournament and they've got one foot in the semi-finals.

Try - Mcleanpublished at 40 mins

    England 33-7 USA

England use the scrum as an attacking platform, Amy Wilson-Hardy running off the back and Katy Mclean pops up with a lovely spin before easing through the open space to score England's fifth try.

Emily Scarratt not on point this time with the conversion but England have a healthy lead as we approach the break.

    England 28-7 USA

England are looking to hit straight back but USA have stepped up their defence and Danielle Waterman is ushered into touch.

USA take a quick line-out, they're playing with greater intensity now, but that's a loose pass out wide to Naya Tapper and the move breaks down.

  17. try

Converted try - Zackary, con Kelterpublished at 33 mins

    England 28-7 USA

USA have looked much more dangerous since being restored to their full 15 players and they've finally got on the scoreboard.

Flanker Kate Zackary powers over the line from close-range to hand the Eagles their first points of the afternoon.

Alev Kelter makes no mistake with the conversion and they'll have gained huge confidence from that score.

    Six minutes until half-time.

    England 28-0 USA

That's a poor clearance from Katy Mclean as her kick misses touch and is collected by Cheta Emba.

USA are inside England's 22 and looking dangerous.

Wing Kristen Thomas powers towards the line put a brilliant effort from at least three England players holds her up on the line.

But they'll come again, England's defence being tested here...

Half an hour played and England lead by 28 points.

But USA, who are yet to grace the world champion's 22, are back to full compliment.

Head coach Pete Steinberg likened this game to the US revolution.

They'll need a mighty revolution to come back from this...

    I'm getting a sense of deja-vu.

England, for the third time this half, secure the line-out inside the USA's 22 and off they set towards the line.

Marlie Packer, as she did five minutes ago, plonks the ball over the whitewash.

England are really laying down a marker here.
