Not sure anyone else in the league could have thrown that pass. Sublime from Cipriani.

Gloucester's scrum is a huge one and they know that they have a penalty advantage as a result of it.

Once the ball gets into the backs' hands it's a moment of magic from Danny Cipriani. He picks out Charlie Sharples on the right with a floating pass 20-metre left to right pass.

It's a moment, and a pass, that isn't dissimilar to the famous one that Finn Russell delivered at Murrayfield this year against England. In short, it's glorious.

    Billy Twelvetrees adds the conversion.

Both packs are just taking a breather while Val Rapava Ruskin receives a spot of attention.

It's the home side's put in and they'll be looking to make the most of this platform.

A few bits of admin for you as we approach the half-hour mark.

Northampton's scrum-half Cobus Reinach is back on the field after passing his HIA assessment and Gloucester are now back to a full complement of players as Ed Slater returns.

James Fish has also passed his HIA but he needs to remain off the pitch for a few moments still while the assessment period finishes.

Before the Cherry and Whites whipped the ball out to Matt Banahan on the left wing there was a high tackle on Jason Woodward.

With Banahan halted into touch, Matthew Carley goes back for the penalty and Billy Twelvetrees does the business.

Dan Biggar has just showed his team-mates exactly what playing for his new clubs means by putting in a huge contact on an on-rushing Matt Banahan.

Banahan, known for his power and finishing skills, is put off balance by Biggar and halted inches from the line.

You'd have almost put your mortgage on it being a try but fair play to Northampton's new fly-half, that takes guts!

    Dan Biggar

Dan Biggar is the man to make sure that they penalised Gloucester's ill-discipline at the breakdown and just before he took the kick the England captain Dylan Hartley arrived onto the field.

He's on for James Fish who has left the field for an HIA. This will be Hartley's first rugby since the Six Nations and it's great to have him back.

With the man-advantage Saints are just beginning to press the accelerator and are pressing the line with purpose.

Alex Mitchell, on for Cobus Reinach right now, almost snipes through after the visitors decide to keep it tight. Can they find five key points?

  9. Sin-bin: Gloucester 11-8 Northamptonpublished at 16 mins

    Ed Slater

Gloucester's captain will have an early 10-minute breather.

TMO Trevor Fisher alerted referee Matthew Carley to an incident between Ed Slater and Alex Waller. On review, Slater is penalised for a neck roll on the visiting captain.

    Piers Francis

Piers Francis is the man to cross for Northampton but he'll be buying his full-back a beer tonight for setting that one up.

Ahsee Tuala, who has been pinged a bit at the breakdown, makes up for his early indiscretions with outstanding hands and strength. His determination to shrug off two defenders paid dividends and his out-the-back offload to Francis will make his highlights reel.

  11. Penalty: Gloucester 11-3 Northamptonpublished at 13 mins

    Billy Twelvetrees

Billy Twelvetrees does the business off the tee and adds the extra three.

You just wondered if they might have fancied going into the corner there but it's early days in this encounter so the kick was the sensible choice.

    Gloucester 8-3 Northampton

    Aye, aye, aye.

Directly off the restart Ahsee Tuala is penalised for straying offside and Gloucester have an instant chance to restore their advantage.

    Dan Biggar

The boot of Dan Biggar makes sure that Northampton capitalise on their first foray forwards.

It's an easy kick for a man of his calibre and might be one to settle a few early nerves of the Saints variety.

The Cherry and Whites' platform is a solid one but they don't cleanly make the break forwards that they would have liked to.

Instead, they lose a little bit of field position and Callum Braley exacerbates the error with a box-kick that goes straight out.

    Gloucester 8-0 Northampton

Northampton's tricky start continues as their fly-half puts the ball straight out on the restart.

It's time for our first scrum of the day on the half-way line and a look at both packs doing their thing.

    James Hanson

    Gloucester tryImage source, .

    What a start from Gloucester!

James Hanson is the man to profit from his pack's excellent work following a five-metre line-out drive. The field position was created after a second Northampton penalty at the breakdown which Danny Cipriani made full use of.

Just before that, the fly-half and Jason Woodward combined for the first time and carved up the metres. This is a really positive start from the Cherry and Whites.

  17. Penalty: Gloucester 3-0 Northamptonpublished at 2 mins

    Billy Twelvetrees

The kick sails through the middle of the uprights and the home side are up and running.

A few numbers for you... Billy Twelvetrees scored 124 points for the Cherry and White last term and ran at an 83% success rate off the tee. Tidy work!

    Gloucester 0-0 Northampton

Dan Biggar's first clearance to touch won't be the longest one that he delivers all day and the Shed duly let him know this.

Gloucester's line-out is a secure one and off the possession they gain the first chance for points of the day after a breakdown penalty. Billy Twelvetrees will line-up the kick...

    Gloucester v Northampton (14:00 BST)

Gloucester enter to the field to a huge roar, the Shed and Kingsholm are in fine voice, and they run through a guard of honour made up of greats from the club.

Today's referee is Matthew Carley and we're all set. Let's get this show on the road!

    Gloucester v Northampton (14:00 BST)

This is what's on the line... this is what Gloucester and Northampton will both want to be lifting at the end of the season. Time for a few stats...

The home side's only two victories in Round 1 since 2009 were at Newcastle in 2015 and at home to Exeter 12 months ago.

Today's visitors haven't won their first game of the season for the past three seasons and won just twice away from home last term. Can they turn that around in the cauldron that is Kingsholm?
