So, Edinburgh off the mark with their first Pro14 victory of the season. A daunting trip to league and European champions Leinster beckons next week.

I think Richard Cockerill will be in front of the beaks after that comment but he's totally right. How can you have a penalty count as high as that and only one yellow card, which was a cynical ploy by the captain?

I don't think Connacht were being deliberately negative, I just think it's the way the referee managed the game.

The Edinburgh head coach also expects Mark Bennett to be missing for "three or four months" after rupturing his hamstring last week in Belfast.

We weren't sure how long the Scotland centre would be out, but it certainly looks like the autumn Tests are a bust for him.

He's had an awful time of it with injuries over the last couple of years - we wish him a speedy recovery.

Cockerill is pretty pleased, though, to see teams picking their front-line players against Edinburgh.

"We've got a good squad and there will be some rotation in the next few weeks," he said.

"We're starting to see every team we play come with their best team. Who knows what Leinster will pick next week? But people are respecting us and are going to play hard because they know if they don't, Edinburgh will beat them.

"That's a new challenge and concept for a lot of people in this environment and we've got to keep making sure we keep improving."

Richard Cockerill has not held back on the standard of Pro14 officiating. Strap yourselves in for this one...

"Its a good win for us but a bit frustrating," he said. We were the positive team and actually tried to play. The penalty count was 15-4 and we probably didn't get the reward from the referee that we deserved.

"If teams are going to be positive and try and play, I expect the officials to referee properly and I certainly didn't think he did that tonight.

"When we score the second try, the referee's going to the TMO saying their 16 pulled it over, there's already been 13 penalties given away - that player's got to go to the bin because it's negative play and you can't just keep letting teams get away with it.

"We don't get a replay for the yellow card when it's a clear line break. Is it a penalty try? We don't know because the referee can't see any vision of it. The credibility of these things has got to improve quickly because the last few weeks, the officiating has just not been up to standard.

"It's hurting us. My job is to make sure people stick up for Edinburgh. Unfortunately, because it's Edinburgh, nobody seems to want to actually look at it and rectify it, because it's just not good enough.

"The referees have to make sure these things are done properly.

"Last week, the first Ulster try was crossing - he comes back and says, yeah, it's crossing, it should've been your penalty. The week before at Ospreys,the last penalty from the line-out - yeah, they pulled it down, it should've been a penalty to you.

"The straw that broke the camel's back - they send a referee here and it was just a mess. It wasn't a spectacle. It ruins it for everybody because one team comes to play, one team doesn't and the referee doesn't control the game as well as he should.

"What are the consequences for him? I know what it is for us: we don't get a bonus point or struggle to get a win and it's a really messy win. We're under pressure to perform - are the officials the same? I don't know."

Pierre Schoeman already endearing himself to the Edinburgh fans with his all-action style. He's a formidable scrummage too - that set-piece dominance earned the hosts a spree of penalties today.

Here's what GH89 says on Twitter: "Pierre Schoemann going full-blooded into every hit, really attacking their ball at rucks and still jogging back faster than anyone when Edinburgh give away pens. Absolute hero."

We talked about how we think Edinburgh want to play high-tempo rugby ,get the pace up and move the point of contact.

They weren't able to do that but they still found a way to win. It wasn't their ideal game but they adapted - they had enough strengths.

Henry Pyrgos was outstanding in the way he managed that game. He kicked a lot more tan most scrum-halves would which helped Van der Walt who had just come into the team, taking pressure off him.

It's just making sure Edinburgh play smart rugby and keep the pressure on Connacht.

The final penalty count was 15-5 in Edinburgh's favour. You can see why Peter Wright was so animated about Connacht not receiving more than one yellow card.

There by no means the finished article at this stage of the season, but the way the forwards set the platform, had a lot of scrum dominance, big ball-carries. There's no doubt they missed Bill Mata - he's an outstanding player.

Good to see Hamish Watson coming back and they're one game further into the season, they've got their first win. This was the first game they were expected to win - they managed that different kind of pressure and come away with four points.

There didn't seem to be a lot of intent from either team second-half.

Connacht are always that sort of team that if you don't kill them off, they can come back and bite you on the backside, so Pierre Schoeman's try was crucial. It was done well.

Edinburgh created a lot of chances and just didn't execute. Cockerill will be happy enough with 90% of the game - it's that last, most vital part when you're in that red zone and you need to get that accuracy and decision-making.

While it was more nervy than Richard Cockerill would have liked, Edinburgh were well in control of those last five, six, seven minutes. They definitely deserved to win that game.

Arguably, they deserved to win over in Belfast last week and didn't - that's the nature of sport.

On this occasion, they had the nous to get through the last five-10 minutes and make sure they get their season up and running.

Edinburgh milk another penalty as the clock ticks red. Van der Walt taps it and boots it into the stand. The home side have their first win of the Pro14 season.

It wasn't pretty, but it's a deserved victory for Richard Cockerill's side. They dominated the first half and ought to have earned a greater lead than the 10-0 margin given to them by Duhan van der Merwe's try and Van der Walt's conversion and penalty.

Pierre Schoeman burrowed over from a maul after the interval, Van der Walt converting to stretch the home advantage to 17-0.

It all looked pretty good at that point, but Connacht certainly made them sweat. Niyi Adeolokun scored. Jack Carty converted it and added a penalty. The Irish province threatened to snatch a draw in the closing stages but Edinburgh muscled their way to victory.

Van der Walt boots play down to halfway. Edinburgh have a minute to see this one out. Surely they're on course for their first win of the season?

Keep the ball for two minutes. It will be a big two minutes for Edinburgh's season if they close this out. Connacht have another try in them.

Carty goes for the crossfield kick, doesn't put quite enough on it for Healy to compete. Dougie Fife does well to gather and he's supported by Socino and Kinghorn.

Here we go, then. We're into the final three minutes and Connacht are pushing for a draw. They have the ball inside the Edinburgh half, but Dougie Fife claims Carty's crosskick and Edinburgh have a scrum on the 22.

That gives Connacht a losing bonus point. When you think about this game has gone, getting a point out of this would be pretty good for them. Weirdly, the way Edinburgh have played in the last 10 minutes, I can't see Edinburgh scoring to take that point away from them. And they can still get a draw with another score.

So, Connacht, as it stands, have a losing bonus point in the bag and a shot at drawing this game with a converted try in the final four minutes.
