So Scotland's year-long undefeated run at Murrayfield is over, albeit against a rejuvenated South Africa side who have rediscovered some of the best of themselves.

Scotland captain Greig Laidlaw on BBC Two: "It's quite frustrating. We couldn't really generate the speed of ball in the second half, but you have to credit South Africa and the way they defended."

Asked if he regretted not taking a kick at goal, rather than going for touch, with 20 minutes left, Laidlaw said: "Potentially, yes, but you have got to be brave to win Test matches. We had enough opportunities to put points on the board off the back of that. We just needed to execute.

"They went and scored again anyway so we'd have probably needed to score again ourselves.

"We are disappointed, but we need to look at ourselves and make sure we generate quick ball."

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi on BBC Two: "Today was very tough, all credit to Scotland. You can see with their record, they’ve only lost one out of 10 games. We knew how big a challenge it was.

"We focused really hard and worked on all the things that didn’t go right last week [ v France]. We made a couple of plans and we stuck to them and I think we managed the period [when Willie le Roux was in the sin-bin] quite well.

"Each game he [Handre Pollard] is getting better, he is one of the leaders in the team, he helps me with a lot of things and we are really proud of him."

Springboks fly-half Handre Pollard, who was named man of the match, on BBC Two: "There's a long way to go and a lot of lessons to learn but it's nice to get a couple of wins on the road. South Africa run down the clock, before Elton Jantjies boots the ball out to signal the end of the game...and Scotland's first defeat at Murrayfield in a year.

They had opportunities there at the end with two line-outs deep inside Springboks territory, but couldn't capitalize on them.

Scotland win a penalty of their own, but before they can take it, the TMO has pointed out to referee Romain Poite a potential "dangerous clear-out" by Springboks flanker Pieter-Steph du Toit.

Finn Russell launches the penalty to touch, but the Scots botch-up the line-out.

Massive chance missed.

The Springboks just trucking their way up towards the Scotland line...nine, 10, 11 phases...Allan Dell briefly turns it over for the hosts, but it's swiftly back in South African hands.

Crunch time for Scotland now. Six minutes left. A converted try needed.

But it's South Africa in possession inside the Scotland half.

Adam Hastings attempts to take the ball up and feels the full force of the Boks' blitz defence, conceding a penalty for holding on.

Elton Jantjies, taking over from Handre Pollards, curls in a superb left-footed kick.

Fly-half Adam Hastings, son of the great Gavin, enters the fray for Scotland, with Finn Russell moving to inside centre.

Can they conjur up a try to turn this game Scotland's way?

Springboks number eight Duane Vermuelen spreads his giant frame over the ball at the breakdown, winning his side a penalty.

But Handre Pollard pulls it horribly wide, his first miss in six attempts today.

It remains a three-point game.

Another intervention from Stuart Hogg, who picks up a loose ball and chips ahead up the left touchline before Elton Jantjies mops up and Handre Pollard sends a relieving kick into touch.

But unfortunately for Hogg, and Scotland, that dash seems to have caused the full-back a problem, possibly to his ankle, and he takes his leave, with Chris Harris coming on and Sean Maitland switching to full-back.
