Peter Horne is penalised - a tad harshly, it appeared - for holding on in the tackle.

But Handre Pollard's booming right foot can only locate the right upright of the posts, bouncing back to the alert Jonny Gray.

He feeds Huw Jones, who from almost on his own line, cuts back against the grain and launches a stunning solo counter-attack, scything past several players to take the hosts deep into Springbok territory.

Hands in the ruck from someone on the Scottish side - was that Stuart McInally? - and Handre Pollard nudges the 14-man Springboks back in front.

    Quote Message

I think Finn Russell and Stuart Hogg will be excited about the prospect of South Africa potentially tiring as the second-half goes on. The blitz defence that the Springboks are using is very tiring so there could be opportunities later in the half.

Scotland will feel they contributed to both of South Africa's tries, with Handre Pollard exploiting a gap between Hamish Watson and Ryan Wilson for the opener, before the hosts lost the ball in their own half for the second.

If they can shore up their defensive act and hold onto the ball in attack, the Scots have again shown they score tries - indeed, only the All Blacks have scored more in Test rugby this year.

"World Rugby need to sort that out. It should be a free-kick, not a penalty. Why should you lose three points for that? It’s completely wrong."
