So often we've seen South Africa run straight but now they're targeting the space in between the defenders and it was so effective.

Try - Scotland 0-7 South Africa (Kriel)published at 6 mins

Stunning break from Handre Pollard, continued on by scrum-half Embrose Papier, takes the Boks into the Scotland 22. They recycle quickly and Jesse Kriel plunges over from a metre out for his 11th Test try.

    Pollard adds the conversion.

If Scotland are going to win this game, first of all they have got to match South Africa's physicality. If they can get parity in the physical stakes then they can think about giving their flair players like Stuart Hogg and Finn Russell a chance to express themselves.

  12. No Faf but a new kid on the Bokpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

There may be disappointment in neutral quarters that Springboks scrum-half Faf de Klerk, a key figure in their recent revival, won't be at Murrayfield today.

The live-wire scrum-half was released to play for his English Premiership club Sale Sharks, who lost 31-25 to champions Saracens earlier, with Scotland wing Byron McGuigan notching a try for Sale, incidentally.

But in his place the Boks give a first Test start to Embrose Papier, who has appeared off the bench five times since his debut this summer.

"I think he is ready for it," said South Africa head coach Rassie Erasmus. "A dry will suit his game really well, as will the pace Scotland play at."

The Springboks' other changes see RG Snyman start at lock, with Eben Etzebeth still recovering from a foot injury, and the giant Pieter-Steph du Toit move from the second row to blind-side flanker.

Duane Vermeulen reverts to number eight with Warren Whiteley injured.

  13. Team news - Scots 'fight fire with fire'published at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

With the recall of Huw Jones the only tweak to the Scotland backline, the five changes in the pack owe more to captain Greig Laidlaw's pre-match vow that the hosts will "fight fire with fire" today.

Loose-head prop Gordon Reid hasn't been sighted in a dark blue shirt since the end of the Six Nations, but Gregor Townsend believes he was key to the Scots' strong performance at scrum-time during that tournament, and he gets the nod over the lighter Allan Dell - who is on the bench - today.

Stuart McInally gets the nod over Fraser Brown at hooker, while two work-horses - Jonny Gray and Ben Toolis - start in the second row.

Sam Skinner, so impressive on debut against Fiji, adds his height and bulk to the back row, where Townsend hopes he will be key to the line-out battle and helping the Scots counter the Boks' formidable driving maul.

The other change sees the relatively 'diminutive' Hamish Watson - if a barrell-chested, 6ft 1in, 16-stone flanker can be considered diminutive - bring his energy and dynamism into the equation at open-side.

  14. Can Jones keep up with Jesse?published at 17:01 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

Today is a big game for Scotland centre Huw Jones, back in the side after some defensive frailties were exposed by Wales in Cardiff two weeks ago.

No-one doubts his attacking threat, as 10 tries in 17 Tests testify. But with the World Cup less than a year away, Gregor Townsend could do with some reassurance that the 24-year-old can be trusted in the biggest Tests.

Well, they don't come any bigger than the Boks and you can be sure centres Damian de Allende - one of five of Jones' former Western Province team-mates in the visitors' line-up - and Jesse Kriel, not to mention their heavyweight forward carriers, will be making a bee-line for Jones' channel.

"There’s been far too much focus on Cardiff and Huw Jones," Townsend told BBC Scotland before kick-off. "He’s been an outstanding player for Scotland over a number of games and seasons now. We all didn’t perform well down in Cardiff, Huw had a good game apart from a missed tackle or two.

"We want to see Huw, the back three and as many guys in the back-line on the ball as much as possible."

Today is also the first time Jones will play for Scotland against the country where he went to university in Cape Town, providing the launchpad for his path into professional rugby via Western Province and the Stormers Super Rugby team.

  17. Springboks pose 'ultimate challenge' - Townsendpublished at 16:50 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

Scotland, ranked sixth in the World Rugby rankings, may be only a place behind South Africa, but head coach Gregor Townsend is under no illusions about the task his side face today.

"The Springboks at any time are a huge challenge. When they’re playing their best rugby of the last few years, it’s the ultimate challenge for our forwards and our defence," he told BBC Scotland.

"Given the fact they’ve picked a really strong team, this will be a proper Test match, more than a proper Test match and it’ll be one of the toughest Tests we’ll face before the World Cup.

"They’ll play to their strengths but they’ll also move the ball. They’ve got some very quick back-line players, especially in the back three. So we’ll see them move the ball whenever they win turnovers, from kicks. But the meat of their game is around that forward power."

  18. Murrayfield expectspublished at 16:47 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

Murrayfield has become something of a fortress in the last two years for Scotland. The hosts have won 10 of their last 11 home games, nine of them at Murrayfield, with the All Blacks the only team to deny them victory.

It's a dry day in the capital, a reasonably balmy 8C, and we're set fair for a rollicking good game.

  19. Joy of six for Scotland?published at 16:37 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2018

Scotland v South Africa (17:20 KO)

Scotland won their first ever meeting with the Springboks - at Hampden Park of all places - in 1906.

But victory over South Africa has been a rare beast since, with the Scots prevailing in only four of the 25 subsequent meetings - all those wins coming at Murrayfield.

In the professional era it is two wins from 17, the last of them on a filthy wet Edinburgh day eight years ago, when Dan Parks kicked six penalties and a drop-goal during Andy Robinson's tenure.

Can Gregor Townsend guide Scotland to only a sixth-ever win over the Boks?

'Toonie' was part of Robinson's coaching staff for that last victory in 2010, and also came off the bench to guide Scotland home in their previous win, in 2002.

Will the Scotland head coach be celebrating a rare hat-trick around 7 o'clock this evening? Join us to find out.
