Someone tell Jack Carty that this is his first World Cup start.

He said he was going to put his own stamp on proceedings and he’s kept to his word so far.

The first cross-field kick to Keith Earls, when an easy three points were there for the taking, didn’t come off but he wasn’t bothered.

Same again five minutes later, try Ireland. If at first you don't succeed, and all that.

That will settle the Japanese nerves because they've actually played a lot of good rugby so far. They're good for the three points.

    Yu Tamura

Solid. Yu Tamura gives it a hearty whack off the tee. The ball flutters eyelashes at the left-hand upright but stays straight enough to put the hosts on the board.

CJ Stander is offside at the breakdown. Yu Tamura is going to take on a shot at goal from 45 m out and bang in front.

After missing his first one quite horribly, what are the Japanese fly-half nerves like?

It was well-positioned out on the touchline. Garry Ringrose was able to get up, pivot and get over the line.

A lovely well-worked try from Ireland involving 1-15. The trajectory of the kick made the catch and the touchdown simple.

Try - Japan 0-5 Irelandpublished at 13 mins

    Garry Ringrose

Jack Carty lands a cross-field kick perfectly after trying his arm once again, this time with a penalty advantage in his back pocket.

Garry Ringrose is exactly the guy you would want under it as well. The centre has started superbly and rules the skies over the top of full-back Ryohei Yamanaka.

Carty can't find the same accuracy off the tee though.

Jacob Stockdale flings inside to Garry Ringrose, who in turn pops to Josh van der Flier, via Rob Kearney's fast hands.

But Japan's defence is whip-quick. Loads of numbers into the breakdown and they secure the turnover.

Japanese pace is beating Irish bulk in that area at the moment...

There is no doubt in the back of Jack Carty's head he'll be replaying that attempt to kick cross-field for Keith Earls.

  10. Postpublished at 9 mins

    Japan 0-0 Ireland

Japan number eight Amanaki Mafi flies into the back of a ruck without binding onto a team-mate. That is a penalty, just outside the hosts' 22m.

    Kick to the corner?

Nope, Jack Carty goes for something a little different. A cross-field searcher trying to pick out Keith Earls.

The wing is crowded out by a rushed cover defence.

Was it on? Unless Carty's kick was absolutely laser-guided perfection, probably not...

Japan are moving the ball and are very comfortable. You can see already Ireland will face a very different game plan to the one against Scotland.

Japan look like they are going to attack right from the outset and really move this big Irish pack around. They're going to keep Ireland on the move.

That strike was as sour as pickled grapefruit.

Yu Tamura rubs a hand across his face after a duff kick clumps well wide of the uprights.

Fans in the stands cradle their heads in hands.

    Japan 0-0 Ireland

Squeals of excitement as wing Kotaro Matsushima chases a grubber towards the Ireland tryline.

    Can he get there?

Not quite, a combination of the bobble and Jacob Stockdale deny him.

    Promising from Japan though.

Watching the Japanese defence in the match against Russia they did not commit to rucks in numbers and we have seen signs of them doing similar in these opening stages. That's an area Ireland will have to go after them and establish some dominance.

Big cheers as Japan secure some piping hot turnover ball inside their own 22m.

And they spin wide. Ireland looking a bit stretched. A rumble through the middle and Ireland are back into their own half.

Jack Carty is pulling strings and probing space.

Ireland's fly-half gets his feet under the table with a clever chip that paints wing Lomano Lemeki into a corner.

The clearing kick is a net territory loss for the hosts.

    Dennis Hickie

Japan were very nervous in that opening match against Russia and will be the underdogs today, so there is far less pressure.
