  1. 'I'm very proud of them'published at 11:03 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2019

    FT: Wales 17-40 New Zealand

Here is Warren Gatland: "It's a bit disappointing. Just before half-time, if it was 21-10 it wouldn't have been too bad - for them to score before half-time was disappointing.

"For three or four players it was a game too far, they were a bit tired. We played a lot better with some fresh legs in the second half against a very good attacking All Blacks team.

"I'm very proud of them, they scored a couple of good tries and could have scored a few more.

"To finish fourth in this World Cup, and with a five-day turnaround, I am really proud of the guys and the way they performed in this tournament.

"We will reflect and be honest. The better team won - we have just got to take defeat on the chin."

There will be disappointment tonight and disappointment we lost in the semi-final against South Africa but that's just where we are at the moment. I still think we are punching above our weight with regards to the players we have to select from in comparison to other nations.

That was the kind of the match many Welsh fans feared and, dare I say, expected. A tired, injury-ravaged Wales blown away by a New Zealand team with a point to prove and their formidable strength depth intact.

A disappointing end to Warren Gatland's 12-year reign as Wales coach, but a final flourish for Steve Hansen's tenure as All Blacks boss.

Well, it might be the game they say no one wants to play, but that was a very enjoyable watch.

New Zealand just too clinical for Wales in the end.

An unsung hero of the Grand Slam was Elliott Dee. Always puts in a huge shift off the bench and doing so again here in a tough game. Would be no.1 hooker in any other northern hemisphere side.

New Zealand take the bronze medal.

New Zealand steal it, and off they go...

Beauden Barrett, to Jordie Barrett. Scampering down field and looking for support.

He finds Anton Lienert-Brown, who tries to escape a Welsh tackle and almost ends up with his shorts around his ankles. A bit too much cheek on show before the watershed...

The All Blacks keep it alive, but there's a fumble. A cracking break comes to an end.

Unfortunately Dan Biggar has missed a tackle again. There was nothing on really. No numbers and just a missed tackle has let Mo'unga go through for a sixth try.

Nice! Hadleigh Parkes leaping into a one-handed pass and almost slam-dunking it into the hands of Hallam Amos.

The full-back is caught by a high tackle from Ben Smith. Wales can stick it in the corner.

Gatland has been very successful - Grand Slams, championship wins and obviously with the Lions as well.

He would have wanted to win obviously, but he is well aware of the record we have against New Zealand and how good a side they are.

I think tonight we have had a crack and tried to play some rugby but made a lot of mistakes and missed a lot of tackles and New Zealand have been a lot more clinical than us in this game.

But Warren has left a legacy for Welsh rugby. I know a lot of people don't like the style of play but you can't take away from what he has done and achieved in the 12 years he's been with us.

    Superb finish from Richie Mo'unga!

New Zealand overpower the Welsh forwards at the scrum, rolling closer to the whitewash before Brad Weber grabs it out the back and stings a lovely pass to his fly-half.

Mo'unga teases his marker with a quick goose-step and stretches out an arm to touch down in the corner.

He can't quite add the extras from out wide.

Devastatingly quick offloading from New Zealand, barely skimming the palms as it's whizzed from one jersey to the next.

Richie Mo'unga then opts to pin Wales back and Owen Lane is gobbled up over his own line.

Jordie - one of three Barretts out there - assumes kicking duties to relieve the pressure on New Zealand's 22.

Brad Weber tickles a kick through the line from the following line-out but Wales scramble well.

Wales can't find a way through, so Jonathan Davies attempts to flick a deft grubber into the corner for the men outside him to chase. It wriggles out of play. In the middle of that move, Ben Smith absolutely nailed a red jersey. Bruiser.
