Remember this from Wales head coach Warren Gatland last week after England outclassed New Zealand?

"We have seen in previous World Cups that teams sometimes play their final in semi-finals and don't always turn up for a final.

"So it will be interesting to see how England are next week and it could be a good game."

Bob: Can we stop the bleating about forward passes, ref is useless. England got taken to the cleaners today. Well done South Africa

Nick: Not just a special win for the nation, but this is for Joost, Chester, James and many from the 1995 team who've passed away. Congrats

The England players stand off to the side and give South Africa a round of applause as the Springboks lift the trophy.

Then, they set off for a lap of the stadium to thank the fans, many of whom dropped everything to come to Japan for this final.

There are many, many more white shirts in the crowd than green. I think it's fantastic that the stadium is still probably 85% full. They understand this is a special moment, a special picture. There are people all over the world watching and it's a seminal moment for our sport as a whole.

The enormity of it for South Africa - for a boy from the townships to rise to the iconic position of the Springbok captain, truly extraordinary - and what a lift for those people, the sport and the country.

They back their rugby team 100% and hopefully this will give them some respite from some of the troubles they have.

This might well have been the final shot at a Rugby World Cup for Ben Youngs and Courtney Lawes, both 30, while Dan Cole, at 32, certainly won't see another.

Jamie George, 29, and Manu Tuilagi, 28, also might struggle to make France 2023.

The England players will have to be looked after here. It's a while before they play again in an England jersey. Some will think about whether they'll take it on and go through that again.

Scrum-half Faf de Klerk speaking to ITV:

It’s mixed emotions but we are so unbelievably glad to do it for our country and for ourselves. We had to play great against England because we know what a great tournament they had had.

We exploited them out wide, then it was massive forward performance from our boys up front. It’s a massive win.

Our forwards have been phenomenal at scrum time, they came out, gave me great ball and time for the boys to play pout in the back. We’re so happy.

  17. 'One day you're the best, the next a team knocks you off'published at 11:13 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2019

    FT: England 12-32 South Africa

    Eddie Jones

England head coach Eddie Jones speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "We just couldn’t get on the front foot. We were dominated in the scrum particularly in the first 50 minutes. When you're in a tight, penalty-driven riven game, its difficult to get any sort of advantage.

"We needed to fix up the scrum, little things around the line-out, then get a bit more accurate in how we attacked. We did that for a while, got ourselves back into the game, but in the end we had to force the game and gave away a couple of tries.

"They were too good for us at the breakdown today. That’s the great thing about rugby, one day you're the best team in the world and the next a team knocks you off."

  19. 'England were taken apart'published at 11:10 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2019

    FT: England 12-32 South Africa

    Matt Dawson
England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

England were taken apart in many, many areas today. They looked, for the first time in long time, rattled from very early on when they tried to break the line or score a bit too early rather than staying patient.

You need to go through your patterns and stay on script. There were a lot of players who didn't stay on script and tried to play their own game rather than the team game.
