George Ford speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live:

"We weren't good enough. Congratulations to South Africa, I thought they executed their plan brilliantly. We were far too inaccurate in the first half. We always knew they based their game on what they do up front.

"I couldn’t be prouder of the lads, they’ve been brilliant all tournament up front, they just did a job on us today.

"They played really well you cant take anything away from them. It’s obviously a huge disappointment for our side. We wanted to finish it off today but we were nowhere near good enough to do that. We've come a long way and it’s probably the most together squad I’ve ever been a part of. We’ll come back."

England gave it everything, but even if you'd said to me that was how South Africa were going to play, I would not honestly have thought they could survive that for 80 minutes, playing in that manner.

They've just stuffed England with everything going against them. This is one of, if not the, greatest victory in a World Cup final.

Manu Tuilagi and Ellis Genge share a very long hug, before England gather in a circle.

Mako Vunipola is the man doing the talking at first, then the team squeeze in even tighter for a few words from Owen Farrell.

To his credit, Farrell looked like he summoned up something from the depths of disappointment. He was very animated as he debriefed his team there.

You can see what it meant to them. Their captain went round to each individual in the England team, shaking their hands. Real good leadership.

They really stretched the England defence and took advantage of the momentum they built from the scrum. They put the pressure on the scoreboard and kept it ticking over. England had to chase and South Africa were really good at shutting down anything they came up with.

    FT: England 12-32 South Africa

South Africa captain Siya Kolisi, who was brought up in brutally tough conditions in a Port Elizabeth township, is at the centre of every group hug and selfie shot.

Things are a little more mournful amid the England ranks. Long-lingering embraces as they realise their adventure is over. Kyle Sinckler, knocked out in the second minute, is right in amongst it.

England World Cup winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

England have been done and dusted in the classroom and the training field. Ultimately they were put away by a South Africa team and management who looked like they were in positions England wanted to be before England were there. They weren't one step ahead, they were two or three ahead.

I was hoping somewhere, in the bowels of the England staff and management, they would have had those angles covered and that they would have expected something like that from South Africa, but it didn't look that way.

From an England point of view, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong. Bus late to the ground, Sinckler off after two minutes, every cute play has gone wrong. Everything South Africa have touched has turned to Webb Ellis gold.

I don't know where this has come from. It's come from the gods. Their defensive line, their line speed, their discipline, their energy, has been simply fantastic. England have no answer. An amazing performance from a Springbok team who everybody wrote off.

A lot of their supporters probably didn't believe this was possible. A royal thrashing of England in the World Cup final.

    That is surely that.

England are trying to run it from deep, but Henry Slade spills the ball after a shoulder to the gut from Malcolm Marx.

Suddenly the Boks are looking for the killer punch rather than the clock.

Wide it goes and Cheslin Kolbe sits Owen Farrell down on the seat of his pants with vicious jagging side step.
