So, it's victory for Glasgow - and how Dave Rennie's men needed it. They're up to within two points of third-placed Cheetahs in Pro14 Conference A, and have taken the first step towards winning back the 1872 Cup.

Edinburgh looked to have snatched it when Blair Kinghorn gamboled over, but George Turner's late, late try ensures Warriors a merry Christmas.

Richard Cockerill's side remain third in Conference B, a point behind second-placed Connacht, and will have the chance to wreak revenge on their inter-city rivals at Murrayfield in seven days' time.

Glasgow Warriors head coach Dave Rennie on BBC Radio Scotland: "I know there have been question marks around our form but we are creating opportunities, we just haven’t been clinical enough. So it was good to put a couple away today. It’s hurt us in Europe, we’ve got to make sure we can take confidence from this and build from it.

"It was on the back of a really physical performance, defensively we were great, really quick off the line. On attack, we carried and cleaned aggressively and generated quick ball that put them under pressure.

"Our counter-ruck was excellent, we want to hunt, but referees aren’t rewarding that very often, so sometimes you’ve got to take space, and Zander Fagerson was the instigator of that. I thought he was outstanding."

Glasgow centre Huw Jones is looking forward to a happy Christmas with that 1872 Cup opener won and done.

“It feels incredible to come out of this one with a win, especially as we have lost a couple of tight games this season," the Scotland midfielder said. "And especially in a big derby game just before Christmas. We can enjoy a couple of days off now.

“They are a quality team and our discipline wasn’t the best; we gave them some easy outs and let them into our half quite a few times. But to hold out at the end was a good feeling.”

More from Richard Cockerill: "It'll be interesting to watch it again and see what went on. Five yellow cards is mayhem across the board.

"It was a stodgy game at the start, very tight and ordinary. We managed to get some ball and look after it for a while. We were winning the penalty count, and Bill Mata goes to the bin almost immediately. We want to have safety for our players. It hurt us desperately.

"In the end, you get what you deserve. We'll take the point and gather ourselves together for next week."

Edinburgh head coach Richard Cockerill reckons Stuart McInally should not have been sin-binned for his high shot on Fraser Brown. The Edinburgh hooker saw yellow after catching the head of his opposite man, who was falling rapidly having been hit low by another visiting player.

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland, Cockerill said: "There was contact but no intent from McInally. It was an accident. You don't want players getting whacked in the head and having to leave the field on either side.

"I've never seen so many cards for actually quite a clean game, really."

Edinburgh wing Darcy Graham: “It just got away from us at the end. We had parity with them the whole game but they took their chances very well in the end, so fair play to them. But luckily we get to put it right next week. We’ll get our review done on Monday, enjoy a couple of days off and then come back in on Thursday and get going again.”

Boy, Glasgow needed that. It's been a while since the Scotstoun crowd have dined on the sweet fare of a rousing victory. No better time to get one than against their fearsome rivals.

Warriors are still outside the play-off spots in Pro14 Conference A, but move within two points of third-placed Cheetahs, who have a game in hand.

Edinburgh do pick up a losing bonus point and stay third in Conference B, a point shy of Connacht and five adrift of leaders Munster.

And breathe. After some of the dullest 65 minutes of rugby you're likely to see, the final 15 delivered fractious drama, end-to-end fare and three fine tries.

We had five - yes, five - sin-binnings, all of them well-judged by referee Ben Blain, and some monumental performers in the packs, particularly from Zander Fagerson.

In the end, the giant tight-head's turnover seals the victory, just as it looks like Edinburgh might steal the win.

That's it! Zander Fagerson, the immense tight-head prop, makes a match-winning turnover. Glasgow have clung on for a mental victory.

It's all on this. It's Edinburgh hammering at the Glasgow line. One missed tackle, one dropped pass, one infringement, and it's all over. What does this crazy showdown have in store for us now?

The action isn't done there. Darcy Graham zips and slaloms towards the Glasgow 22... but the home players steam into the breakdown and win a huge turnover.

Two minutes left. Glasgow need to keep the ball and then hoof it into the stands. What a mental last 15 minutes we've had.
