Speaking of mind games, hooker Stuart McInally is far too wily to fall into the trap of talking up Edinburgh's chances.

The better team? The favourites? Us? Perish the thought...

I see Edinburgh as the favourites tonight. They've got the upper hand on Glasgow, in terms of form. The last game between these two teams was 34-10 to Glasgow. Edinburgh have had a better start to the season than Glasgow so far, though. There are obviously mind games going on here.

  4. Johnson back for Glasgow; Edinburgh's Van der Merwe hits 50published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

The big team news from a Glasgow perspective is the return of Scotland centre Sam Johnson, who was rested last weekend, and starts alongside the much-maligned Huw Jones. He's been struggling for game time and form and eager to go out on loan.

Dave Rennie selects Ruaridh Jackson at full-back and Tommy Seymour on the wing, Ryan Wilson replaces the suspended Matt Fagerson at number eight and Rob Harley comes in to the back-row.

Edinburgh make 10 changes from the largely second-string outfit that beat Wasps. The only notable absence among the front-liners is WP Nel, with the Scotland prop sitting this one out.

Winger Duhan van der Merwe scored three tries against Glasgow last season and makes his 50th Edinburgh outing this evening.

  6. Are Edinburgh favourites?published at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (17:45)

Is the balance of power in Scottish rugby shifting? For years, Glasgow have been top dogs, Pro12 winners, perennial semi-finalists, claimed scalps in Europe and housed the bulk of the Scotland team.

There are signs, though, that the tables are turning the way of the capital club. After two seasons of excellent progress under Richard Cockerill, including a Champions Cup quarter-final they should have won, Edinburgh have assembled a fantastic squad this term capable of making deep inroads into the Pro14 and Challenge Cup.

They have only lost two of 11 matches this season and sit third in Conference B, two points shy of leaders Munster.

Although competing in the top-tier Champions Cup, Glasgow are all but out of Europe, and their chances of a home league semi-final are effectively over. They're fourth in Conference A, six points away from the top three, and a whopping 23 adrift of runaway leaders Leinster.

  7. It's derby daypublished at 16:57 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh (17:45)

From Ben Cairns' outrageous match-winner, to the almighty punch-up between Chris Fusaro and Scott MacLeod, and wizardry from Stuart Hogg and DTH van der Merwe, these inter-city showdowns always have an edge.

Across the paddock, Scotland team-mates lock horns in search of precious Pro14 points, bragging rights and the 1872 Cup.

This is the first of a festive double-header between Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh, two sides who seem to be plotting contrasting trajectories this season.

Edinburgh, riding high in the league and Challenge Cup. Glasgow, for so long the dominant force in Scotland, are struggling domestically and in Europe and in danger of stagnating.
