Summary

  • First of two festive 1872 Cup derbies between Scottish sides

  • Glasgow fourth in Pro14 Conference A

  • Edinburgh third in Conference B

  1. Hastings on song againpublished at 18:57 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

Adam Hastings sends another peach of a kick down into the Edinburgh 22. Bill Mata returns from his 10 minutes in the sin bin, and we are going to have a video review with the TMO.

Fraser Brown is down receiving treatment after being thumped by Scotland rival Stuart McInally.

  2. Watson the colossuspublished at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

Goodness me, the breakdown is an absolute war out there.

Glasgow look for all the world like they're building towards a try. Their go-to men, Scott Cummings, Tommy Seymour, Huw Jones, are making wounding carries in the Edinburgh 22.

Hamish Watson is having none of it. Ben Toolis chops down Cummings as his rival lock embarks on a massive charge. Watson wedges himself over ball, withstands the blue-shirted torpedoes flying in to dislodge him, and wins a big, big penalty. Edinburgh clear.

  3. Off goes Pyrgospublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

A change at scrum-half for the visitors. The very tidy South African Nic Groom comes on for Henry Pyrgos, who we reckon is going for a head injury assessment.

Glasgow decimate the seven-man Edinburgh scrum and will have the chance to apply pressure as Hastings kicks to the corner.

  4. Edinburgh wings hit their strapspublished at 18:49 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

A fleeting glimpse of the sort of blockbuster attack Duhan van der Merwe and Darcy Graham can contribute.

Van der Merwe swats aside defenders like a buffalo running through bluebottles, then Graham blazes up the right flank and slaloms into Glasgow territory.

A few moments later, the big South African is back fielding another Warriors kick, but spills in the tackle, and Glasgow will have a scrum on halfway.

One moment of brilliance from someone like a George Horne could win this game.

  6. Kick-offpublished at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

Blair Kinghorn gets the second half going for 14-man Edinburgh. They've got about eight minutes minus Bill Mata to last before the giant Fijian returns from the naughty step.

Huw Jones has looked good defensively. He's made some good tackles, cutting Edinburgh attackers down when it looks like there might be an element of a threat. Jones and Edinburgh's Mark Bennett are attacking centres and want ball in hand but we haven't seen much of that.

  9. Glasgow penalty count rocketingpublished at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    HT: Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

Ten penalties conceded by Glasgow in that first half to Edinburgh's five. The home side have had a little over a third of the possession and territory and lost several line-outs, but still go in level at the break.

Edinburgh will feel they ought to at least be ahead given their statistical dominance.

In terms of cutting edge, we had Darcy Graham that led to the yellow card for Jackson. And George Horne with his break, but not much else going on. Whinging at the referee isn't going to turn the game around for Edinburgh. The defences are cancelling each other out, there are a lot of mistakes and it's not the game I hoped it would be.

  11. Half-time Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburghpublished at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

Tetchy, try-less, error-strewn. The first half has been a bit of a grind and there's nothing to separate the teams at the interval.

Two penalties apiece from Adam Hastings and Simon Hickey. A sin bin for Ruaridh Jackson and one for Bill Mata right on half-time. Very, very little in this. Not a game for lovers of champagne rugby but it certainly hasn't been dull.

  12. Penalty Edinburgh!published at 18:32 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

That's massive for Edinburgh. Zander Fagerson, who has won two scrum penalties already, concedes one for binding on the arm of Pierre Schoeman. Opportunity gone.

  13. Sin-bin Viliame Matapublished at 18:31 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburgh

Edinburgh number eight Viliame Mata is sin-binned. The officials reckon the Fijian was offside when he made an otherwise brilliant tackle to thwart what looked like a scoring Glasgow move.

The Warriors are going for the scrum against the seven-man pack with the clock red. This is the last play of the half. Can they make it count?

That kick, however, from Mark Bennett, is less than impressive. The former Glasgow man ought to know Scotstoun well, but sends his punt out on the full.

Last minute of the half. Glasgow line-out on the Edinburgh 22. Here come the home side...

And I tell you what, that's a glorious punt from George Horne too. The scrum-half scampers back, covering the area normally filled by the sin-binned Jackson, and returns Henry Pyrgos' box-kick with a super touch-finder of his own.

Edinburgh attack again just inside their own half, and Glasgow concede their ninth penalty of the game. Jackson, however, is back on, and Glasgow have not suffered any real damage while he's been off.

  16. Penalty Glasgow Warriors 6-6 Edinburghpublished at 18:25 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Adam Hastings

Boom. Belter. That's how you strike a ball. Glasgow, down to 14 men, but level with five minutes of the first half remaining.

  17. Postpublished at 18:24 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 3-6 Edinburgh

Just as scrum connoisseur Peter Wright furnishes us with those stats, Glasgow win a scrum penalty. Pierre Schoeman penalised for the second time up against Zander Fagerson.

Adam Hastings gets the driver out and goes for a long-range, 40m boomer.

Edinburgh have got that front foot. Glasgow have given away eight penalties so far, whereas Edinburgh have only given away three.

  19. Edinburgh in the ascendancypublished at 18:22 Greenwich Mean Time 21 December 2019

    Glasgow Warriors 3-6 Edinburgh

The stats show Edinburgh are gaining the upper hand at Scotstoun. They've had 69% possession, over 70% of the territory, and forced Glasgow to make twice as many tackles as the visitors.

More worryingly for Dave Rennie and the Warriors coaching staff, Glasgow have already shipped eight penalties.

    Simon Hickey

No mistake this time from the Edinburgh fly-half.
