Well, on the opening day of this year's Six Nations it's victories for Wales and Ireland as many would have expected.

Wayne Pivac and Andy Farrell's reigns both got off to the perfect start, and though Wales comfortably beat Italy, Ireland might consider themselves fortunate to have beaten a Scotland side who wasted numerous chances. You can read the report of that one here.

Tomorrow it's beaten World Cup finalists England away to an exciting, fresh looking French side.

Execution, discipline in conceding 14 penalties to nine and catching the ball cost Scotland. We didn't deal with their kicking game particularly well. We didn't recover the ball cleanly or recover their kicks into the corners.

  6. Postpublished at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend said on ITV:

"I was proud of the performance of the players. We started the game very well. We had our moments in the first half and should have put more points on the board.

"To see the performance of a new team that's come together - there's a lot to be encouraged about.

"You've got to give credit to the Ireland defence. We'll be frustrated that we didn't take the opportunities, especially the clear ones that were there.

"When we had ball in the first half, Adam Hastings managed the game excellently.

"Well done to Stuart Hogg on his first game as skipper. A try would have been a great bonus for him on top of a great performance - he'll be very disappointed."

  8. 'Johnny Sexton was outstanding'published at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

    FT: Ireland 19-12 Scotland

Ireland head coach Andy Farrell said on ITV:

"That was a proper Test match. It was a tough, attritional game and we're very happy to come out with a W.

"Johnny Sexton hasn't played for a long time and he goes out and puts in a performance like that. He's passionate about being captain of his country in the Six Nations for the first time. It was outstanding for him.

"There's always going to be things to work on. Things that we are trying to implement are going to take time.

"It's a start. We asked the players all week to make sure they stand for something and boy did they stand for a bit of grit."

  9. Townsend backs 'outstanding' Hoggpublished at 19:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

    FT: Ireland 19-12 Scotland

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend offers a resounding message of support to Stuart Hogg after his captain dropped the ball over the Irish try-line.

"Stuart was outstanding, he led the team really well the past two weeks and we went back for three points there," he tells BBC Radio Scotland.

"He was probably excited for scoring the try and it’s not like him. We had a number of other occasions close to the try line – whether it was the ball-carrier presenting the ball better, 50-50 decisions from the referee that didn’t go our way, or ourselves not getting speed to contact.

"They were as important as that incident and especially right at the end of the game to be right on the line. Stuart should flush that and move on because he was outstanding today and has been a very good leader the last two weeks."

Amid that frantic contest, worth noting that Johnny Sexton scored the game's only try, and all 19 of Ireland's points. A class act.

  13. 'Borderline warfare'published at 18:49 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

    FT: Ireland 19-12 Scotland

Ireland flanker Peter O'Mahony said on ITV:

"Scotland are a super team. Every time we play each other it's borderline warfare. It's testament to the way they showed up. They tested us incredibly.

"This is always an incredibly difficult fixture and it wasn't any different today.

"We're 10 days into training camp. It'll take time that was a great benchmark for us to kick on into the rest of the campaign. We'll review everything and there's 100% things we can work on."

Scotland prop Zander Fagerson on BBC Radio Scotland: "Pretty gutted. Played some great rugby, got some opportunities just not clinical enough in their 22. There were some dodgy decisions from the ref over ball. It is what it is. Plenty positives but lots of stuff to work on.

"[Stuart Hogg] Hoggy's just unlucky it slips out his hand. Nine out of 10 times he scores that."

Defence is king. Ireland put very little into that match in attack, their defence won them the game. I could eulogise a number of the Scotland players, the overall difference from recently was stark. But when you create six, seven chances in Ireland's 22 and you can't convert any of them, then you get what you deserve. It's brutal, but this is a tough game.

A win is a win. I feel sorry for the Scots because they were the better team over 80 minutes.

The Irish performance was brave in the end, we defended well. We didn't see an awful lot in attacking terms. It's a win at the end of the day and takes us into next week, albeit with a number of injuries.
