We've seen this script before, at the Aviva Stadium two years ago. Scotland played well and created numerous chances but failed to take them, while Ireland were clinical and ended comfortable winners.

Rinse and repeat? Or will Scotland show us something we've not seen in a while...

Scotland need to get into Johnny Sexton a bit more and get this crowd upset. On one hand, you think they're doing well and they've impressed me, way above my expectations. But the finishing, that last element, has been awful. There have been five or six events inside the 22. If a New Zealand or an Ireland are in those positions, they probably score half of them.

  5. A lot of tackles...published at 17:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

    HT: Ireland 10-6 Scotland

The half-time stats show some big tackle counts in the Scottish pack, as is often the case when Ireland are the opposition.

Jonny Gray leads the chart on 15. Fellow lock Scott Cummings and hooker Fraser Brown have made 10 apiece, and props Rory Sutherland and Zander Fagerson are on nine and eight respectively.

Scotland have played all the rugby and are behind on the scoreboard. They've got to hold their heads high when they come out for the second half.

    Ireland look a little lacklustre.

In case you missed it earlier, Wales started their title defence with a dominant 42-0 win over Italy, with winger Josh Adams scoring three tries.

The biggest selection Andy Farrell had to make this week was at scrum-half, with John Cooney's red-hot Ulster form putting him in contention to start.

Farrell went with Conor Murray, and given the Munster nine's CV, you can understand why.

But Murray has been really poor so far, his box kicks are way off his usual standard and getting himself isolated very nearly cost Ireland the lead a few minutes ago.

With Cooney breathing down his neck, Murray can ill afford to take his eye off the ball.

It's absolutely compelling. So many encouraging things for Scotland and so many things to make you weep. They've dominated large parts of the game, their aggression is excellent and I love that they're staying in the game, looking slick and playing more direct. But all of those chances they've squandered and balls they've had turned over in the Ireland 22. Five times they've been turned over there and they haven't scored. We have seen this before.

Ewan, Aberdeen: Never seen a team whinge as must as Ireland! Constantly in the refs ear about everything.

Nick, Leicestershire: Nice to see the rules that have made the Premiership non-contact rugby are being totally ignored in Internationals!

Alex Robertson: I thought I was meant to be watching a rugby game, not the "Let's kick every chance for points" game.

  11. Half-time- Ireland 10-6 Scotlandpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

Compelling stuff. Scotland have been pretty good, but Ireland's defence has been sensational.

Wow, that was breathless. Bundee Aki charges through a gap in Scotland's midfield, but Scotland get back, and then Sam Johnson intercepts and charges down the pitch.

He's caught, then Adam Hastings kicks to Stuart Hogg and Scotland advance, only to be penalised once again short of the Ireland line. Tremendous defence by the home side again.

  15. Penalty- Ireland 10-6 Scotlandpublished at 33 mins

    Johnny Sexton

No mistake by the Ireland captain as he bangs over a kick from just inside the 10m line.

Ireland haven't been too much of a threat but they're clinical when it matters.

For the first time since they scored, Ireland have some good field position. Ali Price loses his mind for a split second and charges offside in an attempt to thwart his opposite number Conor Murray.

  17. Missed penaltypublished at 31 mins

    Adam Hastings

It was almost out on the left-hand touchline, so not exactly easy, but it's another missed opportunity for Scotland. Hastings' kick goes wide of the right-hand post.

  18. Postpublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

Hamish Watson it was who smashed into Johnny Sexton as he gathered the ball. There's nothing given other than a Scotland scrum for the knock-on by the Ireland captain.

On we go and Scotland squander a good position once again as the ball goes loose, but luckily they get the penalty just inside the Irish half for more indiscipline at the ruck.

It's a difficult position, but Adam Hastings is going for it...

  19. Foul play?published at 29 mins

'Av it! Adam Hastings volleys a ball forward as Jordan Larmour rampaged forward and put in a chip. Hastings races to gather and there's a clash with Johnny Sexton. The TMO is having a look at some foul play here as the Aviva roars in frustration...
