  1. Russell-gate looms large over Scotlandpublished at 16:01 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2020

    Ireland v Scotland (16:45)

Just when Scotland fans thought 2019 was bad enough after a poor Six Nations and World Cup, talismanic fly-half Finn Russell set some metaphorical dynamite to their tournament preparations.

The exact details of what happened are still unknown, but what we do know is that Russell was challenged by teammates and coaches after drinking in the team hotel, and the in-form Racing 92 fly-half then missed the next day's training session.

It culminated in Russell leaving the camp as he returned to Paris to play for Racing after being told he wouldn't be considered for selection against Ireland. Each side has different thoughts about whether that was a walk-out on Russell's part, or whether he felt he was given the choice after a talk with head coach Gregor Townsend.

Either way, the bottom line is Scotland are without one of their most influential players for the foreseeable future, just when they need him most.

Adam Hastings will start at 10 in his place, and has huge pressure on his young shoulders.
