Our dear colleague Thomas Duncan is a terrible pessimist.

Let's have your predictions for the second half.

If you reckon it's a Scotland win, hit thumbs-up.

If you're as much of a doom-monger as Thomas, give us a thumbs-down.

For all that Haouas has given them a gross disadvantage, this try from France was a belter. Scintillating stuff from Antoine Dupont in particular.

It's completely stupid - why would you punch someone in front of a referee and about 20 cameras in the stadium? Haouas lost control.

Adam Hastings has been among the top performers in that first half. He will not, however, be thrilled by his parents sharing a kiss on national TV after his successful second penalty.

Father Gavin, one of the finest players these isles have ever produced, does enjoy embarrassing his lad.

There is a long way to go, but with 14 men in Scotland it is going to be very difficult. France have not controlled the game at all, and it is a fully deserved lead for Scotland so far.

Absolutely vital score at this time in the game - psychologically for France that is a devastating blow.

  9. Half-time Scotland 14-7 Francepublished at 15:53 Greenwich Mean Time 8 March 2020

Well, that contest fairly exploded into life in the final 10 minutes of the half.

With Scotland 6-0 up, France scored a fabulous try through Damian Penaud, then almost immediately lost Mohamed Haouas to a red card for striking Jamie Ritchie in the face. Pretty brainless stuff from the prop.

Scotland capitalised, kicking a penalty before Sean Maitland's fine touch-down in the corner.

Gregor Townsend's troops hold a seven-point lead. France, barring the flash of excellence that led to their try, have been so massively poorer than anything we've seen from them in this championship.

Try Scotland 14-7 Francepublished at 40 mins

    Sean Maitland

Yes, they can! At long last in this championship, Scotland find their ruthlessness.

It's all about the glorious, slaloming break of Adam Hastings, who bamboozles two Frenchman with a dummy and swerve and pops inside to Ali Price.

France don't line up properly down their left side and Scotland shift the ball at breakneck speed, Sam Johnson holding his line and putting Sean Maitland splashing in at the corner.

A devastating blow with the clock red, even though Hastings cannot convert.

    Scotland 9-7 France

France come bludgeoning forward, sparked by the dismissal of their gigantic tight-head prop, but again Scotland are equal to their foray.

Hamish Watson, their scavenger supreme, gets over the ball and wins his side a penalty.

Line-out Scotland inside French territory. This will be the final play of the half. Can they drive home their advantage?

Scotland have clearly got under France's skin. They have denied them an opportunity to go forward, and a moment of madness could cost France dear

    Scotland 9-7 France

I tell you something, I would hate - absolutely hate - to be Mohamed Haouas in the French changing room at half-time.

The camera has just cut to Fabien Galthie, the France coach, who wears the look of a man plotting some kind of heinous act.

  14. Penalty Scotland 9-7 Francepublished at 39 mins

Up steps Adam Hastings to chip over the resultant penalty from point-blank range.

What a huge test of France's credentials now. What a monumental opportunity for Scotland.

Jamie Ritchie doesn't actually go down because of the punch, he's dragged down, but Haouas does connect with the punch

  16. Red card Mohamed Haouaspublished at 38 mins

    Scotland 6-7 France

Fist to the face. Carton rouge for Mohamed Haouas. What a seismic blow to France's grand slam bid.

  17. Haouas in hot bother?published at 38 mins

    Scotland 6-7 France

So, the fracas appears to have started between Nick Haining and Mohamed Haouas. In come a rake of players from each team. Jamie Ritchie steams in to help out his pal; and then gets stuck on his backside by Gael Fickou in a full-on tackle and smacked in the chops by Haouas.

The French prop could be in a fair bit of bother. You can't connect with players' faces.

  18. It's all kicking offpublished at 37 mins

    Scotland 6-7 France

Oh dear, it's like kicking-out time on George Street as play breaks down and a scrap breaks out.

About 15 blokes are involved in the grappling and wrestling and general chaos in the shadow of the French posts.

Referee Paul Williams has some sorting-out to do. Scotland had the penalty advantage, but that could be overturned if the home side have been engaging in some naughty conduct.

  19. Scotland look to respond immediatelypublished at 37 mins

    Scotland 6-7 France

Wow, what a rousing response from Scotland. They win a penalty deep in the French 22 immediately from the kick-off.

Rather than go for the posts, Stuart Hogg points confidently towards the corner. Here come the hosts...

  20. converted try

Converted try Scotland 6-7 Francepublished at 34 mins

    Damian Penaud

    Out. Standing. Absolutely outstanding.

The forwards lay the platform, punching and bludgeoning Scotland back towards their own 22.

Matthieu Jalibert scampers up the left and puts Gael Fickou haring towards the corner flag, where he's just stopped by Sean Maitland.

France come right, Antoine Dupont pumping the ball, holding the defence, and picking a glorious crossfield kick to Damian Penaud, unmarked on the right flank.

The wing gathers and scores. Jalibert whacks over a fantastic touchline conversion. Once again, France strike from a kick.
