Andy: I see the lockdown gave England a chance to get back in the habit of giving away endless penalties...

Paul: I'm not sure that being the superior team England should carry on with this endless kicking battle. Just play some rugby. Italy are up for this and shouldn't be underestimated. They're quick with the ball in hand and look pretty motivated.

BBC rugby union correspondent on BBC 5 Radio Live

England blew Italy away in the first 10 minutes and you thought they were romping towards, if not the title yet, then certainly putting themselves bang in the driving seat. But the last 20 minutes were all Italy.

It frustrates England and makes it so interesting for the game later and brings France right into the picture.

Phew! And that's the last action of the first half. England sigh their relief in the end after dominating the opening stages.

After a rapid start in search of that bonus-point win, the visitors have hit traffic in Rome.

Have Italy nabbed another try? They go long and replacement Federico Mori tears after the ball. England full-back Geroge Furbank is alert to the anger, however, and races across to stop Mori grounding. Jonny May comes across to do just that.

A quick referral to the TMO confirms what we know. As you were.

The Italians for me are getting under the skin of England a little bit. There's not scraping but there's jeering and cheering in the face of and it's annoying England.

Italy win back the ball from the set-piece and celebrate like they've just won the World Cup.

And then they go on the attack...

    Italy 5-10 England

How is that not a penalty try? I've seen worse penalty tries given. England were motoring, it just looked like a sprinting scrum. It's a penalty try all day long for me.

  9. Sin-binpublished at 38 mins

Time for a late England flurry? The visiting forwards race towards the line with Jamie George's hands on the ball, only for the hooker to lose control and hand over possession with the line looming.

Ah, here's why. An Italian player was offside and forced the error. England ball.

Italy try-scorer Jake Polledri is shown a yellow card too and the home side are down to 14 men...

  10. Change of tactics needed?published at 37 mins

    Italy 5-10 England

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union correspondent on BBC 5 Radio Live

England are going to have to look at their tactics at half-time. They started well, but they've kicked a lot and Italy have really grown into it in the second quarter of the game.

Sam Underhill spilt some claret before all that and had to change his shirt as a result. The wound isn't stemmed though, meaning Ben Earl has to come on in his place.

  12. Postpublished at 35 mins

    Italy 5-10 England

Italy win the ball and unleash their forwards. The home side drive, thinking they have got over the line. Not so, and it ends in a scrum.

That collapses as Giosue Zilocchi comes under pressure, the Italians are penalised and England celebrate.

The home players, pride wounded and dented, don't like that and resort to some shoving.

  13. Hill returns from sin-binpublished at 34 mins

Italy go to touch again and have another line out. England's defence is bolstered by Jonny Hill coming back on after his 10-minute sojourn...

  14. Postpublished at 33 mins

    Italy 5-10 England

Italy win a penalty which sparks a melee between the two sets of players on the touchline. But the kick to touch isn't as clinical as it could be. Doesn't matter though, you know. Because Italy win the line out and earn another penalty after an England infringement in the maul.

  15. 'England have been caught between two stools'published at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 31 October 2020

    Italy 5-10 England

    Paul Grayson
Former England fly-half on BBC 5 Radio Live

We've seen it before with England and other teams but if you go in with a mentality, in the first 20 minutes, of not taking too many chances, we're going to kick the ball in the air, but realise you're playing a team in the first 15 minutes that aren't at the races then it can be quite hard to shift that mentality.

England have been caught between two stools.

Neat play from the Italians down the left - where they scored their try, of course - as Mattia Bellini and Matteo Minozzi link up. The latter kicks up field which Jonny May eventually deals with.

    Italy growing in confidence here...

  17. 'England don't need to rush'published at 31 mins

    Italy 5-10 England

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

England's defence looks like it's really on song today. If they can control their defensive line, get some line speed, get some turnovers and then keep the ball in hand they are going to score some tries.

England don't need to rush it.

No, is the answer to the question posed in that last entry. Excellent defensive set by England, forcing the Italians into retreat. That forces Carlo Canna into a hopeful kick which is eaten up by George Furbank and set back to safety.

England are shading possession and territory. And the scoreboard of course. Italy have a scrum close to the halfway line after Jonathan Joseph fumbles. Can Italy make their numerical advantage count?

    Paul Grayson
Former England fly-half on BBC 5 Radio Live

England's main priority is to get five points from this game and getting four tries. I think they are probably better relying on France to do a job on Ireland than chasing a massive points difference.
