Ireland are safely into the third/fourth final-round play-off, if lacking a little in style.

Andy Farrell's slow and steady evolution continues. Is the pace of change fast enough? Is the destination certain enough?

Those are the long-term questions that won't be answered this year.

So it is England v France for the pot next weekend with Ireland playing Scotland, Wales playing Italy and Georgia playing Fiji in the last round of fixture.

Well, what to make of that?

Where are the plus points for Ireland? I thought Tadhg Beirne did well in the back row and Billy Burns looked assured at fly-half. Jacob Stockdale is still a menace with ball in hand, even if he might not have enough of a water-tight game to make a top-level full-back just yet.

It not a second half performance to set the heart racing and the mind dreaming.

Unlike that first-half try from Georgia. That was great.

Ireland with the ball in hand. CJ Stander chugging down the wing. Georgia manage to shunt the express train into the sidings and out of play.

That's your lot!

Georgia win the penalty! Superb defence!

Now. clock in the red. Do they tap and kick out to end the match? Or straight into touch to keep the game going?

The latter!

CJ Stander bores his way over the line, torpedoeing around the back of the line out and pumping the thighs.

But there are enough Georgia bodies prepared to throw themselves in front of the wheels and keep him off the floor.

'Thank you Peter,' says the referee after being given some advice by O'Mahony.

I'm not sure he was really that grateful.

But Ireland have got the penalty for an offside just a few metres from the line. A minute left on the clock.

A bit of wit and pace from Ireland as Kieran Marmion whips the ball away cleanly and Chris Farrell barges through the first tackler.

Penalty to Ireland as the Georgia defenders stray over the back foot at the breakdown. Ross Byrne kicks it into the corner.

Some polish for that scoreline perhaps?

I really expected Ireland to kick on in the second half.

When the replacements came on I thought they would want to put their hands up. But it hasn't worked that way at all.

I would like to think it is a different game against Scotland next week.

Quinn Roux's brow is furrowed. Ireland certainly are not getting it right in the breakdown. They are pinged again for going off their feet.

This half of rugby has been really rank stuff though.

As soon as they get possession, Georgia cough it straight back up.

Unless something dramatic happens in the last 10 minutes, this second half is one best forgotten in terms of the quality of play.

Jacob Stockdale drops the ball onto his instep to grubber through for Shane Daly.

But scrum-half Vasil Lobzhanidze has read what they were plotting and has scurried round on the cover to dot down in the in-goal area.

Ross Byrne nudges play into the Georgia 22m with a penalty kick to touch.

What can Ireland build here?

The quality of the game has dropped. It is very scrappy with lots of penalties.

Georgia are sticking at it but they are having to dig so deep.

Ireland's ball carriers are pushing their luck. Hanging onto the ball for a suspiciously long time in the tackle.

Yep, this time they go too long and get pinged.

Georgia centre and captain Merab Sharikadze was the man making the point to the official by prying away at it.

There is a break in play for a nasty-looking injury to Georgia's Beka Gorgadze. He has been very good today.

He is taken off on the golf cart and Mikheil Gachechiladze replaces him in the back row,

Ireland need to get the next score. If Georgia put another three, five or seven points on it will be an arm wrestle until the end.

Some of the rhythm has gone out of the game. Shane Daly is off the bench to win his first cap for Ireland as Keith Earls gives way.

Clearly they are resting up James Ryan for next week.

I am disappointed Tadhg Beirne has gone off. I think he has been Ireland's outstanding player and I would have liked to have seen them trying Peter O'Mahony with Beirne in the back row.
