  4. Happy Wales will 'take that win'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

    Wales 21-16 Ireland

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac said: "We will take that win any way we can and obviously we now push onto Scotland next week. We often see the extra man advantage but we let Ireland back into the game with a succession of penalties and those points came, but we were able to ride it in the second half.

"You can see the amount of people that came off in the game and it was a steady effect during the game. It's just a six-day turnaround which doesn't help."

On George North's performance: "We were comfortable putting him into the midfield. He did well and we are happy with what he did.

"It's about the campaign and this is day one. We are happy to get those four points and we now look forward to going to Murrayfield."

Louis Rees-Zammit is so quick. Ireland number up quite well but James Lowe hares in off his wing which has caused the overlap.

It looked like Wales had made the numbers count but it was just a defensive error.

  10. 'Key errors'published at 17:18 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

    Wales 21-16 Ireland

    BBC One

Speaking about Billy Burns' missed kick for touch, Ireland captan Johnny Sexton said: "As a 10, you have to go for it and get us five metres out. Sometimes you miss and sometimes you're the hero, but it’s a big difference between 10 and five metres.

"I'm proud of the boys for the effort we put in, but ultimately it came down to a few key mistakes. I think a couple of decisions at the end went against us, but Wales are a very good side and we only have ourselves to blame.

"We spoke about discipline in the week but it let us down and we made some key errors."

    Ian Gough
Former Wales international on BBC Radio Wales

There were a lot of set-piece problems. Our line-out crumbled again today. Jonathan Humphreys and gang will be doing a lot of analysis over the next few days.

But the important thing is they got the win, no matter how.

  13. 'Start with a bang'published at 17:16 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

    Wales 21-16 Ireland

    BBC One

Wales prop Wyn Jones said: "It was a nail biting last few minutes for us but it's nice to get over the line and start the tournament with a win. We just had to win today. It's key to start with a bang and keep momentum going so we are happy.

"Sometimes it is tough to play against 14 men because they front up. We were on top until that moment and then we seemed to ease off a bit."

Our defence stood up when it had to, we were physical, albeit against a 14-man attack.

But again Justin Tipuric's work-rate and work ethic, he's always in the right position.

  16. 'Lifeline'published at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

    Wales 21-16 Ireland

    Sam Warburton
Former Wales captain on BBC One

If there was a crowd in here for the last five minutes, it would have been crazy.

Gareth Davies kicks the ball away and then Wales get a lifeline because that would have been a tricky line-out to defend.

    Wales 21-16 Ireland

    David Humphreys
Former Ireland fly-half on BBC Radio Ulster

That is a huge disappointment. I thought they had given themselves a chance to get something from the game. That's a huge disappointment for Burns. The last five minutes sum up the match, lots of endeavour by Ireland but they just lacked that killer edge.

  19. Full-time - Wales 21-16 Irelandpublished at 17:05 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

Billy Burns! What have you done?!

The Ireland fly-half has a penalty deep inside Wales' half and tries to kick to touch - but he kicks the ball too far and he's kicked the ball dead!

That's it, that's the game over. Wales win, a first victory under Wayne Pivac against a leading side.

Ireland keep coming, keep possession, but they're struggling to get out of their own half.

That is until Garry Ringrose makes half a break before Justin Tipuric catches him.

Ireland now have a penalty inside the Wales half! This is tense!
