  3. More from Townsendpublished at 17:42 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

Gregor Townsend was also asked if his side's lineout woes were down to not having played for a month.

"No it wasn't down to that. It was down to our execution and Ireland's pressure. They were outstanding in that area. They won that area hands down.

On his view the Championship so far: "We've still got France as well, we've still got two games to play. We're past the halfway point and we've had one 80-minute performance [against England].

"And we've had two games where we've let the opposition get ahead, we've shown effort to come back but it's not been enough and we've lost by four points or less. We just need to show a truer picture of ourselves in the next two games."

Scotland head coach Gregor Townsend is a frustrated figure.

"The challenge was being behind by 14 points," he said on BBC One. "We put in huge effort to get it back to 24-24, but the work on is making sure we don't give big leads to the opposition.

"I thought we started poorly, we couldn't get possession and they got points on the board early.

On Tadhg Beirne's try: "It was similar to Hamish's. That was referred to the TMO. I saw one replay and it didn't look like he got the ball down, he might have 10 seconds after, but you just hope these things get referred to the TMO if there's any doubt."

On balance, Ireland deserved to win that game, but Scotland did well to come back from 14 points down and will look at that with disappointment

  8. Hogg rues Scots' ill-disciplinepublished at 17:19 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    FT: Scotland 24-27 Ireland

Stuart Hogg was a frustrated Scotland captain after the game and believes it was mistakes rather style of play that cost his side.

"Ireland were outstanding for 80 minutes out there and fully deserved their win," he tells BBC One.

"I think the frustrating thing is giving them 24 points in the first place.

"Credit to Ireland, they took their opportunities, but for the second game in a row, we've been ill-disciplined and given easy field position and killed ourselves at times.

"We've given them good positions and they've executed it well, so fair play to them.

"We scored 24 points playing the way we want to play. We are scoring tries by throwing the ball around, but we can be a bit more clinical at times."

  9. Sexton eyes second in Six Nationspublished at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    FT: Scotland 24-27 Ireland

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton was very modest about his winning kick.

"I probably got a little bit lucky - it was not my best strike - and it got there thankfully," he said on BBC One.

"We're just letting in soft tries, which is not acceptable at international level, and it is a little frustrating as we dominated the game. But, if we can finish second after a poor start to the Six Nations, we'll be happy."

There might be more Scots in Warren Gatland's Lions squad this summer than in previous tours, but not by much you suspect.

England, Ireland, Wales have all shown over the years a winning mentality. A refusal to be beaten, with big plays produced at the death.

Scotland have never shown that consistently in the entire history of the Six Nations.

It's fine margins, and individual players - Hamish Watson chief among them - have shone. But until they start winning games regularly, there will always be questions.

  11. 'Huge' for Irelandpublished at 17:07 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

    FT: Scotland 24-27 Ireland

Ireland's Tadhg Beirne, who was man of the match, on BBC One: "It was a bit strange. We felt we had control, but Scotland managed to stay in there and it was a huge shift from the lads.

"It is huge after the first two losses and I think getting a win here was massive in terms of moving forward."

If Ireland had lost that game, they wouldn't have been able to live with themselves as they had so much more possession and territory, but Scotland can score tries - that's what they're good at - but they are making so many mistakes

  16. Full-time - Scotland 24-27 Irelandpublished at 16:52 Greenwich Mean Time 14 March 2021

A knock on at the death and the win is Ireland's!

The difference between the sides evident at the death. The winning mentality to clinch a match at the end and hold out. Scotland still well short in that department.

What a perfect kick from near the touchline from Johnny Sexton. A captain's kick.

It looked to be heading wide, but the fade he put on the ball took it between the sticks. Beautiful strike.

Hogg converts, and we are all square with six minutes left. What drama to come?!
