It's about as big a roar as 16,5000 fans can muster.

Captain Alun Wyn Jones looks quite mean for a man carrying a giant stuffed lion toy. He tosses it unceremoniously aside to line up on the field.

Japan walk out onto the field to a decent cheer. They've got quite a few fans in the crowd, including one man with a half-and-half flag that is 50% Japanese, 50% Scottish. Creative.

The atmosphere amps up and the chants of 'Lions' increase. Here they come...

It's not all been fun and games in the Lions camp. South-Africa born Duhan van der Merwe has had social media trolls to contend with.

The Scotland wing will be playing in front of a home crowd at Murrayfield for the first time today.

But, after he played for the junior Springboks in 2014 then switched to Scotland three years later after qualifying through residency, not everyone agrees with his Lions inclusion.

He said: "I'm just going to ignore all those kinds of bits. I've been ignoring all the stuff that people have been saying on social media.

"You get the odd comment here and there - 'he's obviously born in South Africa so shouldn't be representing Scotland or the Lions. He's going back to South Africa and shouldn't be representing the Lions'.

"You get all those kind of bits. I've put all that stuff behind me and focus on what I can focus on.

"I know how I feel in my heart sitting here representing the Lions and that's all that matters."

Japan are led back into the tunnel in an arrow-head formation with captain Michael Leitch at the front. They are walking as a unit, with an arm on the shoulder of the man in front of them.

There are plenty of fans with Japan headbands on - a popular accessory during the 2019 World Cup.

The Brave Blossoms got a big cheer as they left the field. They won a lot of hearts when they hosted that World Cup.

  10. We have 'siege mentality' - Jonespublished at 14:43 British Summer Time 26 June 2021

British and Irish Lions v Japan (15:00 BST)

Captain Alun Wyn Jones says the difficulty in getting the tour off the ground during the pandemic has given his side a "siege mentality" early on.

The team have been playing and training in a coronavirus "bubble" with restrictions expected to be more strict in South Africa.

"Because the bubble is as such and will be going forward, it has let us develop a siege mentality," said Jones.

"Not against any rugby teams but against the threats to the tour as a whole."

The Lions may want to savour the presence of 16,500 fans at Murrayfield.

It might be the last cheers they hear, with it looking likely that they will be playing behind closed doors in South Africa.

The country is currently battling a third wave of the virus, with the health system in Gauteng - the province where the Lions begin their tour - particularly struggling.

  12. Fagerson and Watson miss Murrayfield send-offpublished at 14:37 British Summer Time 26 June 2021

British and Irish Lions v Japan (15:00 BST)

There were supposed to be four Scots in Warren Gatland's starting XV at Murrayfield.

It was a fitting reminder of the fact that this Lions squad has the greatest Scottish representation since 1989.

But sadly both Zander Fagerson and Hamish Watson had to pull out because of a back spasm and concussion respectively. They should be back in time for the Lions' first game in South Africa though.

Incidentally, this is the first time in 71 years a Lions starting XV hasn't contained an England player.

What do you make of the Lions' song choices?

Songs on tour aren't exactly a new concept. Nothing better than some very loud and very out of tune singing on a team bus.

We want to know your tour song choices. Where did you go? What did you sing? Keep it clean please.

Tweet us using #bbcrugby and we'll share our favourites on here.

Despite the Covid restrictions, the Lions have been doing their best to bond.

In Jersey, that meant paddle boarding and playing golf.

There has been plenty of singing too, with one player from each nation choosing a song. Here they are:

    Zander Fagerson, Scotland: Loch Lomond

    Wyn Jones, Wales: Calon Lan

Courtney Lawes, England: You'll Never Walk Alone

    Jack Conan, Ireland: Wild Rover

    The wait is finally over.

For a while, we weren't sure it would happen at all. But a global pandemic is no match for the Lions.

Plans to have a home tour or even play South Africa in Australia have been scrapped.

It's happening: the Lions head to the home of the world champions tomorrow, but before that they need to get a first-ever game in Scotland out of the way.
