    More from Gatland:

"We put them under a lot of pressure. The last 50 minutes it was all us.

"This is the game we needed. It was definitely a step up. They were at full strength basically.

"Where they can improve I'm not too sure but we'll continue to improve. It's going to be an exciting series."

    Warren Gatland told Sky Sports:

"They came pretty hard at us in the first half. I was really pleased with the way we got back into the game and how strong we looked in the second half.

"We stayed in the battle. That was the pleasing thing.

"The guys in the changing room are saying there is no reason why we can't win the series."

  5. 'I want AWJ competition' - Maro Itojepublished at 21:22 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

FT: South Africa A 17-13 British and Irish Lions

Maro Itoje impressed in the match and he told Sky Sports: "I think the first half especially we gave them a few things a little too easy. The Springboks are a good side and they take advantage of those mistakes

"We have been wanting a proper test and this was, it will be beneficial going ahead."

On the half-time team talk: "It was bettering plan A, the first half the breakdown wasn't good enough. We weren't broken down through phases we were broken down through turnovers. It's a brilliant lesson going forward."

And on AWJ's return: "He's a man of immeasurable experience, he is the most capped player in the history of rugby. He is going to add his experience and clout.

"To be honest I want the competition, I want the best team available and I want to compete. Those kind of decisions are left to the man who gets paid the big bucks in Warren Gatland."

Andrew Priestley: If anything, that Lions performance has resulted in creating even more selection headaches ahead of the first Test. Gatland and the coaching staff have so many viable options for the starting XV. Selection will all come down to the game plan they wish to execute.

  7. Jones has made 'an unbelievable recovery' - Murraypublished at 21:15 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

FT: South Africa A 17-13 British and Irish Lions

Conor Murray was named tour captain when Alun Wyn Jones was injured in the Japan game. But now Jones has made an incredible recovery and will return.

Warren Gatland said before the match that a conversation will take place with Jones and Murray about who the captaincy armband will go to.

"The aim is to try and win a Test series and to have the best guys available," Murray said.

"To have Alun Wyn Jones back as a player and leader around the group is going to be unbelievable. It is an unbelievable recovery."

  8. 'We learned a lot about each other' - Murraypublished at 21:12 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

FT: South Africa A 17-13 British and Irish Lions

Murray added: "Over the last few weeks we haven't been tested to the level we're expecting in the Test series so to get that this evening is going to stand to us [in good stead].

"It is going to be a battle of the breakdown. Whatever team manages to get on the front foot and compete well in the air... both sides have learned a lot about each other.

"A lot of stuff we expected from the Boks and it was good to face it live."

  11. 'A compelling Test series' incomingpublished at 21:05 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

FT: South Africa A 17-13 British and Irish Lions

    Chris Jones
    BBC rugby union correspondent

A first defeat for the Lions on tour, and plenty for Warren Gatland to ponder.

Individually there have been some strong performances - Wyn Jones, Curry, Itoje, Harris and Watson among those to excel - but big questions remain about the Lions' best combinations and their best tactics.

But above all, the physicality and intensity from the South Africans suggests that this Lions tour, for all its many setbacks and obstacles and lack of fans, may still be able to throw up a compelling Test series.

The wing tries to kick it on further, but the ball heads into touch.
