Andrew Priestley: Superb scramble, goal-line defence from the South Africans. The Lions aren’t being afforded an inch, they’re going to have to be much more clinical than that when the tests roll around.

  5. 'Nightmare first half for Lions'published at 20:03 British Summer Time 14 July 2021

HT: South Africa A 17-3 British and Irish Lions

    Chris Jones
    BBC rugby union correspondent

A nightmare first half for the Lions, who at times looked spooked in the face of a Springbok-inspired onslaught.

Even though South Africa have hardly played since the Rugby World Cup, the template remains the same: suffocating kicking-game, relentlessly physical, and touches of genius from the likes of Cheslin Kolbe.

You have to question some of the Lions' tactics, especially the merits in trying to bash the door down with constant pick-and-drives close to the line

But they aren’t out of this, with South Africa ‘A’ down to 13 for the start of the second half.

The Lions are yet to make it over the whitewash despite several visits to the opposition 22.

Even with South Africa down to 13 men at the end of the first half, there was no way through.

Conversely, the Springboks have turned to their World Cup-winning backline for their tries.

Eben Etzebeth's chargedown and Sbu Nkosi's pace combined for the first score, while a moment of Cheslin Kolbe magic set Lukhanyo Am up for the second.

It's a double movement so no try.

And South Africa win the penalty. That's huge.

It's very hard to see what's what in a scramble of legs.

A Lions player comes up short and then moves again, but it's unclear whether they got the ball over or not.

Finally the Lions are over the tryline.

There are no huge celebrations, Conor Murray just calmly steps back to show the referee where it has been grounded.

But the TMO will have a look.
