I am absolutely thrilled with that. It felt a tour that felt cursed a few weeks ago is starting to get together

We took apart South Africa completely.

Adam Jones said 3-0, who am I to disagree with him?

  5. 'You have to look at changes'published at 20:07 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

I feel for Elliot Daly it didn't come off for him. It's even worse when you give away penalties. Then you get smashed, nothing he did worked out for him.

He was fortunate that he managed to get back on at the end of the game with some nice touches.

In the balance on how the lions were trying to play the game... maybe the combination is Harris and Henshaw or Aki and Henshaw.

We will also have to look at Biggar's HIA.

  6. 'South Africa will be stronger'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

More from Gatland: "They have had their own challenges with players not taking a full part in training.

"A little like us, with two games a week it is quite hard to prepare for an international.

"I expect that they will be a lot stronger in the next two matches."

  7. 'Beating the world champions is special'published at 20:05 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

More from head coach Gatland: "It is definitely up there. Any Lions Test victory is special. It has been a challenge. We've worked hard.

"Having been down and fighting back into the game was the most pleasing thing.

"To beat the world champions first up in their own back yard is really special."

  8. 'I'm a big Farrell fan'published at 20:04 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

Owen Farrell is ready for that environment. This is where he thrives. Having been on a tour with him before I am a big Farrell fan. Even if he isn't in the best form.

I think Ali Price was okay today. I thought he delivered pretty well. He didn't get too much of an opportunity to attack the ruck. I need to see the game a second time to see the level of performance delivered.

  9. 'Outstanding' Lawes and Itojepublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland said: "Maro [Itoje] was immense and both he and Courtney Lawes had outstanding games. Then we had some decisions to make about bringing players on and we got those right, but certainly those two were very good.

"We are incredibly pleased with Jack's [Conan] performance and it was solid. He's like a sponge, in terms of gaining knowledge and he asks good questions.

"I know he was incredibly nervous about the first game he played but this week he seemed a lot calmer and assured. It has given him confidence."

  11. 'Second Test will be ferocious'published at 19:57 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

    Brian O'Driscoll
Former Lions captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

There was no thought of posts, to the corner and they backed themselves. They said we are going to need a try to swing the momentum back in our favour. It felt more than a seven-pointer. That's the difference between the best teams at the top of their games

The second Test is going to be more ferocious than the first half was today!

  12. 'A couple of calls' could have gone either way - Gatlandpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

British and Irish Lions head coach Warren Gatland said: "A bounce of the ball could have gone either way, and a couple of calls as well.

"If they had been different it might have affected the result. We are happy with how we defended and we don't think they created a lot of attacking opportunities.

"Winning the game means, whatever happens, the series will go to the last weekend which keeps everyone engaged."

  13. 'I couldn't believe what I was watching'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

    Brian O'Driscoll
Former Lions captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

I couldn't believe what I was watching. It is the ultimate tale of a game of two halves. We couldn't fire a shot and the Boks couldn't do a thing wrong and then it turned around.

They [the Lions] earnt the right to get that luck. it's game on now, the Boks will be better after that but they will be stewing that they lost a nine-point lead.

  14. 'There is a lot we need to work on' - Kolisipublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

Springboks skipper Siya Kolisi says his side made too many mistakes but will be better in the second Test.

"We started well in the first half," said the flanker. "We controlled the set-pieces and everything. In the second half we missed opportunities, we knocked on the ball.

"There is a lot we need to work on. We could have done better. We made mistakes. We can come back stronger, we have got another game under our belts."

  15. 'South Africa will be hurt from this' - Gatlandpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

"They will be hurt from this because they are an incredibly proud nation and world champions," Gatland said.

"The message to the players, it wasn't just about the 23. This is an incredibly tight group of players and the non-23 did a good job this week of helping prepare.

"The victory was about the whole squad."

  16. 'Lions out-muscled the muscle men'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

    Bobby Skinstad
Former South Africa captain on BBC Radio 5 Live

Fair play Lions. Courtney Lawes was very quiet in the first half but great in the second half.

[South Africa captain] Kolisi did well in his contributions but he couldn't convert that into tries.

I thought there were opportunities for the Springboks to close out the game. I give credit to the Lions. I don't like saying this, but I think the Lions out-muscled the muscle men in the second half

  17. 'Players have to force Gatland's hand'published at 19:43 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

    Ugo Monye
    2009 Lions winger Ugo Monye

The players who weren't picked they will have to force Gatland's hand. Will playing well in a training session be better than beating the Boks?

  18. 'We may look at different combinations' - Gatlandpublished at 19:42 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

"We may look at different combinations going out and doing a job for us next week," Gatland said.

He said they will take a look at some individual players, suggesting there could be some team changes before next Saturday's second Test.

  19. 'Raucous' changing room - Gatlandpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

"The changing room is pretty raucous," Warren Gatland tells Sky Sports.

Alun Wyn Jones and Maro Itoje both did post-match interviews and were both pretty stony faced as they looked to the next two Tests, but apparently it's a bit more fun behind closed doors.

  20. 'One of the best matches I've watched in a long time'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

FT: South Africa 17-22 British and Irish Lions

    John Barclay
Former Scotland captain on BBC 5 Live

There were a couple of obvious stand out performers, Lawes and Itoje.

The error count was so low, what makes a Test match, you looked at it and it was settled on discipline. Gatland, that's why he is the coach he is.
