Fine details lacking from the Lions in the first half.

A litany of penalties not an issue on the scoreboard but an illustration of how the first half has gone.

South Africa in third gear and with limited possession have been efficient. Expecting changes to the Lions in the forward pack soon into the second half.

Don't know about you but that half felt about three minutes long. Non-stop!

Can the Lions turn things around in the second 40? Thumbs up for yes, down for no.

    Not this time.

Slick offloads from the Lions create a bit of space for captain Henshaw and he looks to be away but Willie le Roux makes an excellent tackle and the Irishman loses the ball.

    We'll have a scrum instead.

    Agonisingly close.

From on the halfway line Elliot Daly has the accuracy but not quite the distance as the end of the first half looms.

Dave: The Lions look good when they put the ball through their hands, and they make good ground - so why not do more of that? The kicking for territory tactic is just gifting possession to the Boks and forcing the Lions to tire themselves out defending

Scrap that. The penalty is pulled back to the halfway line so the bigger boot of Elliot Daly steps up instead.

Ali Price puts another kick up high into the air and Handre Pollard tries to gather but knocks the ball on.

The Lions will have a scrum just outside the Springboks' 22. They haven't got much out of their kicking game so far so that's a good result.

Oh wait, cancel that. The TMO has shouted up about an earlier high tackle and Dan Biggar will get another kick at goal instead.

  15. 'A try would be huge for Lions'published at 17:41 British Summer Time 24 July 2021

    Chris Jones
    BBC rugby union correspondent

Concerning opening half an hour for the Lions, leaking penalties and the set-piece starting to creak.

And when they have won penalties of their own, Dan Biggar has been struggling for distance with his kicks to touch.

But a score before half-time would be huge, with Gatland confident the Boks will tire and the Lions get stronger as the game goes on.

    Dan Biggar

Oh dear. Dan Biggar hooks a nervy-looking kick left. The Lions needed that before half-time.

Ali Price sends a swift backhand pass away with a Springbok running at him full pelt.

The Lions have advantage for a scrum infringement and Dan Biggar tries a cross-field kick. It comes to nothing and the Lions fly-half will go for the posts again from out on the left.

The Lions are desperate for the win obviously, but let's take a moment to give some respect to South Africa.

They have played one Test match since winning the 2019 World Cup. They spent six days isolating in hotel rooms because of positive Covid tests. Their captain just rejoined the team this week after catching Covid.

And yet here they are nine points ahead of the best of British and Irish.

    Of course it goes over.

The Lions are in danger of losing this match before it properly gets going. Nine points down against South Africa is not what you want to be.
