England v South Africa (15:15 GMT)

England's replacements make plenty of noise as the starters head down the tunnel too.

But it does not compare to the volume coming from the Twickenham crowd as they take to the pitch.

Captain Courtney Lawes jogs a bit, before stopping to take it all in.

England v South Africa (15:15 GMT)

Darkness is already starting to fall at Twickenham which only adds to the atmosphere.

The Springboks shout their way down the tunnel with Siya Kolisi clapping and almost dancing at the head before he leads the team out onto the pitch.

    Hanyani Shimange
Former Springbok and professional rugby union player

There’s been a lot of growth for South Africa [since the 2019 World Cup] but I think there’s still 10 players that played in the World Cup final. If you consider what they went through before the Lions Series and to come out of that when something like 20+ of the players had Covid.

They’re in a good space at the moment. A lot of people say they play that boring style of rugby. I think they are trying to evolve slowly but they’ll do that at their own pace. It’s purely because they haven’t had a lot of Test matches.

They’ve got the ability to dig deep and they learn quite well from mistakes and they’re building. I definitely think they’re a better team than they were. They’re more experienced and more mature. They’ve managed to navigate the tough times and games quite well.

    Springbok

The South Africa squad warmed up with a pointed bit of scrum practice. Two world-class front rows going head to head before they join forces to try and blow England's rookie front row to smithereens.

The hosts' warm up looked a little looser and freer. Hooker Jamie Blamire hitting his line-out darts amid some fast multi-phase patterns against the tackle pads. Will England's tactics be to dodge and weave rather than stand and slug it out?

Courtney Lawes describes himself as a "chilled" captain.

He looks just that as he leads England back into the dressing room. The forward is clearly not getting caught up in the World-Cup-revenge-set-piece-battle-fight-to-the-death hype too soon.

  6. 'There should be fireworks here'published at 15:00 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2021

    Chris Jones
BBC rugby union correspondent at Twickenham

It's two years on from that night in Yokohama when South African dreams were made and English ones broken.

The Boks didn't play for 18 months because of Covid but since then they've been pretty dominant.

Their forward pack will put England's green front row to the ultimate test.

Eddie Jones has refused to admit revenge is in England's mind but make no mistake England are desperate to right those wrongs of 2019 when their scrum was dismantled.

There's a danger history could be repeated this afternoon again.

    There should be fireworks here.

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

If there is any kind of battle at the set-piece England are coming off second best.

The game plan needs to be tweaked – whether that’s the pace, the intensity that scrum-half Ben Youngs and fly-half Marcus Smith have to inject into the game so they run the big South African players around

Or do they mess the line-out about or disrupt the scrums, perhaps edging towards illegalities?

They have to do something because they are simply not as good as South Africa in that area.

    Rob and Kavitha

Rob and Kavitha, originally from Durban, now of Doncaster, are on the second leg of a Springbok double-header, having watched their side duff up Scotland at Murrayfield last weekend.

This rematch of the 2019 Rugby World Cup final is the main course for them though.

They are already signed up for the title defence as well, having bought a ticket package to follow the Springboks through to the quarter-finals of France 2023.

And both are confident that they will have to duck and dive for tickets deeper into the tournament.

"It's destiny for Siya," says Rob of captain Kolisi following in the footsteps of Richie McCaw and becoming only the second captain to defend the title.

England v South Africa (15:15 GMT)

Interesting from South Africa head coach Jacques Nienaber... He claims he has no idea where banned director of rugby Rassie Erasmus is watching this one.

"I'm not sure to be honest," he said when asked where Erasmus is on Amazon Prime. "When the ban came out he was out of sight so I haven't spoken to him yet."

Looks like Erasmus will have plenty of representation around Twickenham anyway.

Revenge is top of the agenda no matter what the players say. Eight England players from the 2019 World Cup final face a Boks team that have given them nightmares since then.

There are big moments in rugby teams and you become a little bit super-human when you are the underdog and trying to exact revenge.

    Ref Link

The fella selling Ref Link - the earpiece that lets you listen to Andrew Brace's words of wisdom in the middle - has some topical patter for Twickenham's patrons.

"Rassie's got his already! He's round the corner in the pub. And his is a special edition two-way one so he can bend the ref's ear in real time!"

The Braai and biltong sellers on Rugby Road are coming at South Africa's banned director of rugby with a take as supportive as a good jock strap.

One key person conspicuous in his absence is South Africa director of rugby Rassie Erasmus.

The 49-year-old has been banned from all rugby for two months and from involvement with the Boks on matchdays for a year.

The punishment comes as a result of Erasmus' hour-long social media video criticising the refereeing in South Africa's first-Test defeat to the British and Irish Lions in July.

    Andy and Leanne Harlow

If things go badly for the Boks this afternoon, Andy Harlow is going to hear plenty about it.

Originally from Johannesburg, he has been living in England for the past 18 years and currently lives with his English wife Leanne in Lincoln.

Two of their England-supporting friends are also with them, to ensure Andy gets the home fans' point of view in stereo.

Still Andy reckons they will have piped down by the end of 80 minutes.

"Yeah, I am pretty confident, I think Boks by 10," he says.

South Africa's changes are not quite so dramatic.

Fly-half Handre Pollard and scrum-half Cobus Reinach come in to replace Elton and Herschel Jantjies.

Lood de Jager starts at lock, pushing Franco Mostert to the bench.

Pollard in particular is a source of nasty memories for England after the fly-half scored 22 points in the Springboks' 32-12 World Cup final win.

South Africa: Le Roux; Kriel, Am, De Allende, Mapimpi; Pollard, Reinach; Nche, Mbonambi, Nyakane, Etzebeth, De Jager, Kolisi, Smith, Vermeulen.

Replacements: Marx, Kitshoff, Koch, Mostert, Wiese, H Jantjies, E Jantjies, Steyn.

All eyes will be on England's rookie front row, featuring hooker Jamie Blamire and prop Bevan Rodd alongside the more experienced Kyle Sinckler.

Rodd starts, with Joe Marler on the bench after only training once with the side this week because of a Covid-19 isolation - the reason Ellis Genge is unavailable.

Blamire gets the nod after Jamie George was injured in victory against Australia.

Joe Marchant is on the wing with Manu Tuilagi returning to the midfield, while flanker Courtney Lawes is captain in the absence of the injured Owen Farrell.

England: Steward; Marchant, Slade, Tuilagi, May; Smith, Youngs; Rodd, Blamire, Sinckler, Itoje, Hill, Lawes (capt), Underhill, Curry.

Replacements: Dolly, Marler, Stuart, Ewels, Simmonds, Dombrandt, Quirke, Malins.
