That's a wrap for our coverage of this first game of the 2022 Six Nations.

A brilliant win and performance from Ireland, and a dreadful start to Wales' title defence.

You can read Michael Morrow's match report from the Aviva Stadium here.

The Six Nations action doesn't stop there, though. Scotland and England have just got their match at Murrayfield under way, and you can watch that game on BBC One and follow the game here.

But for us and the team in Dublin, that's all for now.

Thanks for joining us and enjoy the rest of the weekend's action.

Former Ireland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

We spoke before the game about Ireland being under pressure but it took less than three minutes for them to make their mark. It's hard to find a positive from Wales' point of view. They got a try, at least!

I was optimistic, I thought Ireland would win comfortably but not by 22 mins. They probably should have won by more.

They will be confident of causing an upset against France but it's a tough away game, and they've got to go to Twickenham too. But things are definitely moving in the right direction.

  3. 'A lot of self-reflection for Wales'published at 16:41 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

Wales have just got to focus on next week. There will be a lot of self-reflection over the next couple of days but then you have to park it.

There's not much they can take from that game. Everyone appreciates how many players they are missing but this is the team we've got, and they've got to make something from it.

  5. 'We've got to regroup and be better'published at 16:35 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

Wales head coach Wayne Pivac: "We talked about what we needed to do in that game from the outset and that was to match them physically and our discipline needed to be spot on.

    "We didn't achieve that.

"In the first 20 minutes the game, the penalty count was off and we let them into both halves very cheaply.

"Going a player down certainly doesn't help but we've got to regroup and be better.

"We can't go back in time in terms of the players missing, we need to learn our lessons from today and this is the squad we've got.

"No-one's happy with defeat, we came here wanting to win so they're all very disappointed."

  6. 'Ireland clinical, Wales sloppy'published at 16:32 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    Tom Shanklin
Former Wales international on BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra

Ireland were clinical, physical, very good off the set-piece. They were brilliant at slowing Wales' ball down.

Wales were very disappointing. They looked sloppy in attack, never got going and were blown away in the first 20 minutes. They couldn't recover from that.

Tactically, they got it wrong too. It played into Ireland's hands, they should have tried to play the ball wider but they couldn't get enough of the ball to do it.

It was a very honest interview from Dan Biggar. The physicality wasn't there for Wales, but Ireland's players ran such good lines and asked so many questions of Wales' back line - the Josh Adams experiment at centre didn't work today.

Wales captain Dan Biggar: "We didn't get much right but credit to Ireland, they played the conditions well and strangled us physically.

"It will be a tough watch back on Monday because the big thing we wanted to focus on this week was physicality and we didn't get that right.

"Ireland dominated that and we couldn't get on the front foot.

"Obviously missing the big players is an issue but we were missing the physicality and discipline.

"It's been a disappointing afternoon and we haven't got long to get it right.

"It's a must-win next week if we have any hope of keeping hold of our title.

"Ireland had a big home advantage today but we can't wait to get back to Cardiff next week."

Ireland captain Johnny Sexton tells ITV: "Against the reigning champions to come away with five points, I would have snapped your hand off.

"It's never going to be perfect in the first game. We've got lots to improve but it's great to do that after a win.

"We've got everything to play for and we can build momentum now.

"We're going to have to be at our best to win in Paris [next week]."

  10. 'It was special for it to all come together'published at 16:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    FT: Ireland 29-7 Wales

Man of the match Mack Hansen: "The guys around me made my job a lot easier.

"We ran great lines and played well together. It was special for it all to come together and in front of a packed house, too.

"It's been a dream come true.

"Everyone here has adopted me as one of their own and I'm so proud to be Irish.

"It's a great start but now we've got to go on to the next one.

"We will enjoy tonight but France will be a tough game and we know that."

This result is exactly where Welsh rugby finds itself in contrast with the buoyant game in Ireland.

The form of the struggling Welsh regions compared to the thriving Irish provinces has been translated onto the Six Nations stage.

Injuries and missing players side, this has been a chastening defeat for the defending champions at the hands of Andy Farrell's men. The final scoreline deeply flattered Wales.

Scotland at home awaits next Saturday. It could be a long few weeks for Wayne Pivac and his side.

There aren't many options for Wales if we're looking ahead to next week. Jonathan Davies and Willis Halaholo could come in, and Josh Adams has had a tough time at centre today.

But there's not much else they can do because of all the injuries.

A fantastic start to the Six Nations for Ireland. This competition is all about momentum and they've got that.

A lot of us thought they would win, but not by that margin.

  14. Full-time - Ireland 29-7 Walespublished at 16:10 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February 2022

    That was resounding.

Ireland lived up to their pre-match favourites tag with a commanding display, securing a bonus-point victory.

As for Wales, that was a dismal start to their Six Nations title defence. Let the inquest begin.

Wale's line-out goes awry and they present Ireland with a final chance to attack.

Wales get a penalty, kick to touch, gather the line-out and cheer themselves as referee Jaco Peyper falls over.

But Ireland turn the ball over and go on the attack once more. Can they finish with a flourish?

Not this time. They concede a penalty in the Welsh 22 and Callum Sheedy kicks to touch.

The clock is red. Final play of the game.

Fair play by Taine Basham, great awareness. He has been the only carrier Wales have had today, he deserves that try. One positive from this game is his performance.
