England fans are in short supply. It is a partisan crowd who will dare to dream of retaining the Calcutta Cup.

Here we go as Marcus Smith lofts the ball forward.
England need a strong start to make up for last year's miserable showing.
Scotland need a strong start if they are to finally mount a serious challenge.
It may be week one but there's a lot on the line already.

Quote MessageIt will come down to fine margins today, which comes down to discipline. Your set-piece has got to be spot on.

Who knows what will happen in this game? I started in the Calcutta Cup and I'm finishing with one.

We've discussed last year's tournament, but what about more recent form?
Scotland enjoyed a rout against Tonga and saw off Australia and Japan, although both of those wins were of the rather stodgy variety. South Africa proved too powerful, with their defence well on top in a one-sided second half.
The following week, England eked out a one-point win over the world champions and they trounced Australia after a canter against Tonga.

Hamish Watson, last year's player of the tournament, and Jamie Ritchie are real brawlers at the breakdown and, at the request of Eddie Jones, World Rugby issued clarification about when the ball is out the back of a ruck.
Matt Fagerson is another clever, mobile player but doesn't have the bulk of many of the world's top number eights.
England's Sam Simmonds has real speed and power in that position, while Tom Curry is an absolute dynamo and is already being talked about as one of the best number sevens of all time.
Lewis Ludlam is perhaps a surprise choice but he was at six when England won in the blustery Edinburgh rain in 2020.

England head coach Eddie Jones has been talking briefly to BBC Sport ahead of kick-off.
"We've been looking forward to this game", he said. "We've got a very good young team, and this is a great opportunity in tough conditions, and with a raucous crowd.
[On England's new captain]: "All Tom Curry has to do is play well and the team will follow him."

Quote MessageFor a Six Nations game, you don't have to get a team up - if anything you have to bring them down a level. A great coach I had, Shaun Edwards, would always talk about controlled aggression. You cannot spill over the edge and give away lots of penalties. Gregor Townsend has been coaching a long time now, and looks in a great place to lead Scotland into this championship.
Scotland v England (16:45)
This is Gregor Townsend’s 50th Test in charge of Scotland.
He has won 28 and drawn one of the previous 49, which is the best record of any professional era Scottish head coach.
Scotland have scored 166 tries under Townsend and conceded 107.

Of course, that's just the kind of thing Finn Russell loves to hear.
The mercurial fly-half hasn't always seen eye-to-eye with coach Gregor Townsend but the hatchet is well and truly buried and the 29-year-old is on top of his game with Racing 92.
Russell packed a lot into last year's 11-6 win at Twickenham, banging over two penalties, helping to set up Duhan van der Merwe's try, picking up a yellow card and the man-of-the-match award.
Scotland v England (16:45)
That was the clear message from visiting defence coach Anthony Seibold.
"He is a super-talented player," he said this week. "If you watch his club form [for Racing 92], he has been outstanding.
"You need to take time and space away from him. That is easier said than done of course."
Scotland v England (16:45)
There are sure to be some heart-in-mouth moments for full-backs under swirling kicks and the odd slip, slide and fumble, but both teams favour a fast, attacking approach, with exciting fly-halves Finn Russell and Marcus Smith pulling the strings.
That promises to be a fascinating battle of wits.

A few hours ago, conditions weren't much better than that day in 2020.
It was blowing a hooley and tipping it down in Edinburgh but the rain has stopped and the wind has dropped to around 20 mph, which is a mere breeze in these parts at this time of year.
Scotland v England (16:45)
The Scotland squad may well be in a good place but it's worth remembering England were victorious on their last visit to Murrayfield.
In appalling conditions, Ellis Genge scored the only try in an error-ridden contest.

Quote MessageIf you believe Eddie Jones, there's no way Scotland can lose this game. That's what concerns me. Scotland have a settled side, and consistency, but they haven't won anything yet. This feels like the year they need to perform.
Scotland v England (16:45)
"I’m not biting," was the response from Scotland captain Stuart Hogg to Eddie Jones' claims of underdog status.
"We just concentrate on getting our things right. It is irrelevant what is written, what is said. We have got respect and admiration for everything Eddie has done in his rugby career. As a coach, he has been absolutely tremendous working with some of the best sides in world rugby and you know he is always going to chuck a comment out here and there."
The Exeter full-back went on to say: "It is definitely the best squad I have been involved in, put it that way. For me, the excitement, the buzz, the cohesion that this group has got is the best it has ever been."
Scotland v England (16:45)
That's what England coach Eddie Jones reckons. Sorry, that's what he said.
"They have got to cope with that expectation, there are 62,000 fans and then they will be thinking about all the fans on BBC television that are watching the game, so they have got to carry that burden," opined Jones the other day.
"It is the first time I have been in the experience of going up there with Scotland as red-hot favourites. They are expected to win. Every time the players look at the crowd at Murrayfield they will feel that expectation. They have got to cope with that."
