  3. 'We are happy with that'published at 17:33 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    FT: Italy 0-33 England

Speaking to ITV, England head coach Eddie Jones said: "It was a good performance. We started the game well, got a bit of a flow, started the second half well, and defended well at the end.

"Italy are a tough team and they keep coming. If we were a bit tidier with some of our work, some running lines, it could have been a big score. We are happy with that, now we move on to Wales.

"They (Italy) have played New Zealand and France and in the first halves been in the game – and they were not in the game today.

"Marcus [Smith] did well, Harry Randall did some good things at the start and [Alex[ Dombrandt had a really solid game."

England had a quiet 20 minutes where they didn’t do a lot, they made some changes but showed what they have in the locker with a 95 yard move at the end. They put Italy away against some of our better judgement.

When your team has changed by that many people you are comparing apples and oranges, but we wanted England to put a performance on away from home.

There is a nice mix, Isiekwe was good. Dombrandt had nice touches, Itoje is class and Marchant was a bit unlucky. I do like the look of Smith and Slade working together when England are on the front foot.

Sorry but this England side is as exasperating to watch as previous brittle versions. Handling errors and mind-bogglingly daft pens. This was Italy. Any true elite side would break this brittle England bunch. So poor. Unforgivable given the time and resources they have.

  8. 'We wanted to put on a show for the fans'published at 17:09 Greenwich Mean Time 13 February 2022

    FT: Italy 0-33 England

Speaking to ITV, England fly-half Marcus Smith said: "We put a big emphasis on today, we were very disappointed after Murrayfield. Eddie [Jones] spoke about the next job and we have put ourselves back in it with that win today.

"I’ve never played here before, there was a special atmosphere, with loads of England fans having come out. We had to put a show on for them, we were a bit scrappy and credit to Italy but to score 33 points is always nice.

"To play alongside Harry [Randall] is special, we have a good connection off the field and I hope we have on it as well.

"We have loads to work on, we are still learning on our journey, but we will enjoy tonight and get back on the horse tomorrow."

mb: Well, not much for France or Ireland to be worried about there. Too rushed, too selfish, not playing the phases. Too many errors. Still, a BP win banked.

Mark: Italy continue to devalue the Six Nations. England have made multiple mistakes, played at maybe 60% and have still walked this match.

With the clock already in the red, that knock on by Henry Slade is the last act.

England have cruised to a bonus-point victory in Rome, which moves them up to second in the Six Nations table.

Maybe it's harsh, but I think Eddie Jones (and his team selections in particular) is now the biggest check on England's progress

Italy now 34 6N games without a win. Surely time to have a 2nd division and relegation/promotion for one team?

The answer is neither as they are penalised at the scrum and England will have the put in.

Will the visitors run it from deep as they look for a sixth try?

Italy must receive credit for still plugging away.

They will have the scrum close to England's line with the clock ticking down.

It remains to be seen whether they opt for the drop goal to get something on the board, or if they go for the try?

Back to that familiar shape from England, on the front foot, with Smith making good decisions. Malins picked a lovely line off Smith, and good support from his tighthead prop on the inside.

    A run-in...

Marcus Smith puts up a big Garyowen and Leonardo Marin never looked comfortable as he knocks on.

Then it's all England and Smith puts Max Malins through with another flat pass.

With the Italian defence back-pedalling, it's thrown to Kyle Sinckler who dots down under the sticks.

Smith makes no mistake with the conversion.

England have not been able to control possession in the second half like they did in the first, and credit to Italy for that. They will be hoping to get out of here with no damage, prepare for Wales at home and still think about winning the championship.

England have been sloppy since the fourth try but they will be delighted to keep Italy to nil.
