Out of nowhere, Sarries have the opening try of the game.

Sale fail to deal with Alex Goode's kick forward in front of their own line, which Joe Carpenter cannot gather, and Max Malins gets a foot to the loose ball to put it into the in-goal area.

But Max Malins is then taken out by Tom Curry while chasing the ball and Luke Pearce immediately awards the penalty try.

  2. Replacementpublished at 22 mins.

    Saracens 6-6 Sale

Back to the action now after that unexpected interruption.

We've got some pitch invaders at Twickenham from Just Stop Oil.

Two people run onto the pitch and throw their orange paint powder onto the pitch.

Sean Maitland does well to claim another big up-and-under but looks to have come off worse for wear in the coming together with Tom Roebuck.

A beautiful strike from George Ford. He is absolutely on fire with his goalkicking at the moment.

There used to be some questions about his technique but he looks on point today.

    Sophie Hurcom
    BBC Sport at Twickenham

The noise whenever either team goes on the attack is deafening inside Twickenham.

There are a few blocks of seats empty, but not many at all.

After a difficult season for English rugby, the powers that be will have really wanted this match to be a real showdown, showcasing the best of what the Premiership is all about to new and old fans inside and outside the stadium.

Just under 20 minutes in and there's so far nothing between Saracens or Sale. This is heating up to be exactly the kind of match everyone hoped for.

  8. Penalty: Saracens 6-6 Salepublished at 18 mins

    George Ford

A bit further out this time for George Ford, but again it's meat and drink to this seasoned campaigner.

All level once again as we approach the midway point of the half.

But this time it's Sale who get the scrum penalty.

Saracens tight-head Marco Riccioni is the man pinged this time, and it's a central opportunity for George Ford to even things up.

Referee Luke Pearce gets a bit too involved in the game now.

He's right in the way of a Maro Itoje pass in the middle of the Saracens half.

An apology from the official and some grumbles in the crowd at what could have been a promising turnover by Sarries after Sale's forwards failed to make progress.

Referee Luke Pearce is not in any mood to mess around today. He is in full international mode.

That is a gift for Owen Farrell.

  12. 'Sale need to sort it out'published at 15:19 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

    James Mitchell
Former Sale scrum-half, on BBC Radio Manchester

Three penalties now for not rolling away, it's not good for Sale, they need to sort that out.

Sale need to keep the ball a bit more in the next 10 minutes, they're giving it away a bit cheaply at the minute and Saracens can pin you back.

  13. Saracens aiming for sixth title, Sale secondpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 27 May 2023

A bit of context in terms of what's at stake today.

Saracens could win their sixth Premiership title, which would draw them level with Wasps and Bath, with Leicester out front on 10.

Sale could join Harlequins and Exeter on two titles if they can add to their 2006 triumph.

  14. Penalty: Saracens 6-3 Salepublished at 15 mins

    Owen Farrell

Sale are pinged once again in front of the posts, with Jonny Hill the guilty party by not releasing in the tackle.

Owen Farrell needs no second invitation to restore Saracens' three-point lead.

Two simple penalties for the England man so far this afternoon.

    Saracens 3-3 Sale

Just as I say that, the ball is ripped away from Sale centre Manu Tuilagi in the tackle.

Max Malins puts in a stunning 50-22 kick to suddenly give Sarries an attacking platform of their own.

An early test for replacement hooker Theo Dan with his first throw, probably much earlier than he thought he'd be called into action...

    Saracens 3-3 Sale

Sale win a penalty at the resulting scrum and kick up to midway inside the Saracens half.

The Sharks are not looking overawed on their return to the big stage after 17 years away.

I'll be very surprised if we see Jamie George again today. It had all the classic signs of a concussion.

  18. Replacement - George forced off with head knockpublished at 11 mins

    Saracens 3-3 Sale

The territory does not pay off for Saracens as Jamie George runs straight into Tom Curry and loses the ball.

Sale break up to the 10 metre line but play is stopped by the referee with George still down and needing treatment.

The England hooker is concussed in that challenge and is forced off.

Theo Dan comes on to replace George, but Saracens have lost a five-time Premiership winner and all his experience.

No foul play there by Curry - both players dipped for that.

    Saracens 3-3 Sale

    Matt Dawson
Former England scrum-half on BBC Radio 5 Live

Sale have got themselves in the game after that initial Saracens onslaught.

You can see the confidence growing amongst them.

It's particularly important for the younger Sale players, they want to feel that they are competing.

  20. Postpublished at 10 mins

    Saracens 3-3 Sale

First scrum of the day is a Saracens put-in on halfway, and is re-set after a bit of over-eagerness in the front row.

This time Sale prop Simon McIntyre is deemed to have collapsed the scrum and Saracens get the penalty and can kick up to the Sale 22.
