I'm wondering what game some England fans are watching. I'd rather be an England fan at the moment than a Wales or an Australia fan!

This tournament reminds me more and more of 2007. England written off before a ball was kicked, improved as the tournament progressed, not the most exacting of draws, and before you know it, they're in the final! Sounds crazy, but it could happen...

England can only beat what is in front of them. Plenty of nations have failed at points in so-called 'easy' draws, and that's not with standing playing Argentina (who have beaten the All Blacks in 2022) with 14 men all game. England have done as well as they can with the games played so far, end of.

Chile captain Martín Sigren: "It's a tough lesson. Four years ago we were getting the same result against Canada and the USA. We were losing games against Brazil. Four years later, look at us, we're here, so I have to hold on to that.

"We will keep on working, maybe four years later the results will be different."

Speaking to ITV, Marcus Smith said: “It was special. Whenever you get an opportunity to pull on an England shirt, it’s a special feeling. I have got really close to these boys over the last 10 or 11 weeks so to be able to run out with my mates in a historical (first] game with Chile was amazing and it was nice to score some tries for the team.

“We have been working hard in the last few weeks. The boys made a good start over the first two games but it was our job to take another step forward. We will enjoy tonight but then get back on the horse for Samoa next week.”

On playing at full-back: “I think it’s giving me another perspective on the game. I understand the frustrations of the outside backs when they don’t get the ball and I can see the spaces.

“When you have wingers out there that can score tries for fun it is a pleasure to play for me."

Chile head coach Pablo Lemoine, speaking after the game: "I'm not really disappointed. That's reality. That's what actually happens with rugby at the moment. We have never played before at a World Cup. We are coming here and we are part of the show but we can't play the game.

"We haven't played that kind of game in the cycle between the World Cups. I hope that changes because it's not good for the game or the supporters.

"Every game gives us positive things but at the moment we are only thinking about what happened today. The score is completely unfair."

Marcus Smith at full-back was a bit of a gamble but he made 10 carries over the gameline and gained 144 metres - both game highs. Worth sticking with him at 15?

Having one group with France and New Zealand in it, and another with Ireland, South Africa and Scotland in it does seem a bit odd but who knows, if the Rugby World Cup goes the way of others the answer will be more groups and more games...

England have had nothing to do in group D. The draw is all wrong. They have the easiest run of any of the big teams so no comparison to the other groups.

England captain Owen Farrell speaking to ITV after the game: "Enjoyable! It is always enjoyable to pull on an England shirt, but to do it like we did today was good fun.

"We want to keep on progressing at everything and that is the feeling we are getting from the group. There were a lot of changes and we will enjoy this, go into the break and come back again."

On playing with Marcus Smith and George Ford: "There are two good players on the pitch there and it is always good to have communication - that is one thing we wanted to get better at, the whole team has had the attitude of improving."

  15. 'The future can be whatever we want it to be'published at 18:46 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

How far England can go in this World Cup remains to be seen.

But here's what Henry Arundell thinks: "We can’t get ahead of yourselves, we are focusing on Samoa now and we want to win the group. The future can be whatever we want it to be."

  16. 'It's a bit surreal'published at 18:45 British Summer Time 23 September 2023

Speaking to ITV, Henry Arundell said: "I can’t believe it, it’s a bit surreal. I finished the game and thought ‘how did that happen?’ It shows a real depth in this team and there are aspirations to attack and score tries. It depends on the team we are playing and the circumstances and the conditions. Steve [Borthwick] always says to find a way to win and that was finding a way to win."
