Wales coach Warren Gatland speaking on ITV: "We know how desperate Australia are going to be, but we're desperate as well.

"If we match the Fiji performance we win, we were pretty good for 65 minutes against Fiji. If we avoid errors and put an 80 minute performance in I'd back us.

"It's going to be an exciting tough match."

Wales fans are confident and the Australian fans are asking for a bit of luck and normally they're very confident.

The only one that's confident is Eddie Jones, it feels a bit different that Wales are favourites to beat Australia.

Scotland saw off stubborn Tonga with a bonus-point 45-17 victory to keep alive their hopes of progressing from Pool B at the World Cup.

On a warm afternoon in Nice, George Turner, Duhan van der Merwe, Kyle Steyn and Rory Darge delivered the required four tries before the interval.

Tonga played with admirable commitment and led briefly when Solomone Kata responded to Turner's early score, but missed tackles and ill-discipline let them down, with Afusipa Taumoepeau and Scarlets forward Vaea Fifita both shown yellow cards.

Fifita's card was upgraded to red after the final whistle.

Ben Tameifuna and George Horne traded scores in a largely scruffy second period before Blair Kinghorn and Darcy Graham added some late gloss.

I'm not too confident, I do think this is a huge match and probably one of the most important matches for the Wallabies of all time certainly in the modern era.

I'm not sure what Wallabies team we will see tonight.

    Yes it was Wales!

That famous third-placed victory all the way back in 1987.

Who can forget Paul Thorburn's last-gasp touchline conversion? Well, if you were alive back then.

Remarkable to think that remains Wales' most successful World Cup.

Ha, to be fair Bryn (see the previous post), Australians are never shy when it comes to any sport but losing this evening could put a sock in it for once.

Just to put into context, Australia have only ever lost three pool games in the World Cup.

And the last time they lost two World Cup games in a row was 36 years ago.

Any guesses who the second loss was against?

If it's possible for two rival fanbases to be both nervous and confident at the same time, this game epitomises it.

Wales and Australia face off in Lyon knowing defeat, in all likelihood, means a group stage exit from the Rugby World Cup.

Having travelled from the other side of the world to be here, Wallabies supporters insist that they "haven't come this far to bow out early".

But Welsh fans in Lyon are equally positive and expect a close contest. It has been billed as the most important match of the group.

For Welshman Bryn Parry, who lives in Australia, nothing would please him more than seeing his homeland put one over his country of residence.

"I have to live with them, and they can be pretty loud-mouthed when it comes to sport!" he said.

"At the last World Cup in Japan they were so confident that they'd hammer Wales, but we beat them in a very tight game.

"I think Sunday will be similar. I'm nervous, but I think Wales will win."

Rival head coaches Warren Gatland and Eddie Jones have traded verbal blows for more than two decades.

But the Wales head coach opted against "putting the boot in" before Sunday's crunch World Cup Pool C game in Lyon with Jones already facing heavy criticism in Australia.

In fact Gatland, who moved one clear of Jones for the most World Cup wins as a coach with victory over Portugal last week, sees plenty in common with the Wallabies boss, both having returned to previous roles.

"Despite that, I do back Wales tonight"

Wales could wrap up qualification for the quarter-finals this evening with a match to spare.

Bonus-point wins against Fiji and Portugal mean they will be guaranteed a top-two finish in Pool C with victory in Lyon.

"It is in our hands now, which is a nice feeling, it depends on us and how we perform," said wing Josh Adams.

"We're aware of the carrot at the end, it has motivated us a lot this week."

Wales will also have a 13-day break before their final group game against Georgia in Nantes and Adams says they have thrown everything into preparation for the Wallabies.

"It is the best week we've had in my opinion," he said.

"I have felt the energy build as the week has gone on, which has been a good thing.

"We've talked about different aspects of the game, what it means for us as a squad going forward. Sunday will be a great contest, with both teams going after each other."
