  1. It's Earls' day in Dublinpublished at 19:54 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Ireland 29-10 England

Ireland ran out winners against England in Dublin in the second of their three World Cup warm-up outings.

There was a key talking point when England's Billy Vunipola was initially shown a yellow card for a dangerous second-half tackle on Andrew Porter, which was then upgraded to a red. He will have an anxious wait to see if that rules him out of the World Cup.

Mack Hansen was Ireland's best performer at the Aviva Stadium, but it was another wing - 35-year-old Keith Earls - who stole the show.

Coming off the bench to win his 100th international cap, Earls produced an acrobatic finish for a try in the corner to the delight of the home crowd.

It's Samoa next week for Ireland and Fiji for England before the crunch time comes for squad selection for the World Cup.

    Thanks for joining us.

  2. 'There was a lot to play for this week' - Ryanpublished at 19:41 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Ireland 29-10 England

Ireland captain James Ryan speaking to RTE Sport:

We were excited to play at home this week, the last time before we head off to France, so there was a huge amount to play for.

We have a good win record here at home, a lot of guy's first opportunity to take a claim for the squad and obviously Keith Earls' 100th cap, so there was a lot to play for this week and we are pleased that we got the result. We had a pretty sloppy first half but I thought we built it better in the second half.

[On Keith Earls] It was amazing, it really is some achievement, only the ninth player to reach that milestone. You think about the number of players that have played for Ireland, so it's amazing to see.

I am going to try and focus on the positives and I think I saw more from England. They went through a couple of periods of play when they looked like something might happen but it just didn’t really click today. There were some good individual performances and George Ford did quite well in difficult circumstances.

I think the key thing to bear in mind is they have another week together and they have plenty to work on and improve during their time together.

I would like to see the team that started today start against Fiji because they are quality opposition and I’d like to see some of those combinations click.

    FT: Ireland 29-10 England

It was a tough week with all of the attention on my 100th cap. To get it the way it worked out, with a try against England, there is no better way to do it.

Bundee's pass to me was great and when you are running for the corner you want to make sure. It was probably a bit over the top [his forward roll in the finish] but I enjoyed it.

My journey has had more downs than ups but I will enjoy tonight. It will be a tough job now [for head coach Andy Farrell] to select the 33 for the World Cup but we will wait and see.

  5. Mack Hansen - Player of the matchpublished at 19:29 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT Ireland 29-10 England

Mack Hansen speaking to RTE Sport:

It was good to get the win, we probably didn't play as good as we wanted to, we came in feeling really confident this week but we could put them away.

To be fair they are a tough team, they gave it everything they had as well and they put us under a lot of pressure. There was a few mistakes that we still need to fix up before going to the World Cup.

Faz [Andy Farrell] just gives us a license to go out and play the game. I say it all the time, I'm just fortunate to have all these good player around me.

There's still a plenty lot that we can fix up if we want to be lifting the Webb Ellis in a couple of months. It was good to hold them out to 10 points but that's all I can really say. Faz will be mad at me if I say we played really well.

It wasn't perfect but I think Andy Farrell has a lot to be happy with. A lot of the basics were done well. I think Ireland were ruthless when England went down to 14 men, you could see an increase in tempo, you could see the energy.

Match practice is what Ireland need and that is going to come over the next few weeks but a comprehensive win without hitting anything like their full capacity.

The final whistle goes in Dublin and it's a comfortable enough win for Ireland as they make it four victories in a row against England.

Few in the ground would have begrudged Keith Earls that try on the occasion of his 100th cap.

Hard to look past that as the highlight of a match that England had to play for over 20 minutes with 14 men as Billy Vunipola's yellow card was upgraded to a red for a high tackle on Andrew Porter.

Keith Earls is an outstanding athlete - 35 going on 36, one chance and takes it.

What a special moment. To mark the occasion with a score like that, Keith Earls deserves every moment of it.

Before Earls scored, it looked like England were finally fighting their way back into the game but it's a case of too little, too late.

It seemed to be working for them to be chasing the game with 14 men - they look much-improved in the final quarter but ultimately this has been Ireland's game and no-one could begrudge Keith Earls for that beautiful finish.

What a special moment as Keith Earls, off the bench to win his 100th cap, sprints over for a try.

Super finish from a super Ireland servant as he dives over with a perfect forward roll as he grounded the ball in the corner.

And the home crowd absolutely loved it.

Jack Crowley adds the gloss with a successful conversion.

Now England have 14 men they are getting stretched and Ireland are using an appropriate amount of depth in their attack against the rushing English defence.

It was back and forth for a period there and it looked like if England had scored that would have been a momentum shift but Ireland won that arm wrestle and came away with the try.

What a pass from Ross Byrne to set up Mack Hansen for Ireland's fourth try.

The fly-half found his wing with a long pass wide to the right and Hansen stepped inside Freddie Steward superbly to get over for a well-deserved try.

Byrne's poor kicking display continues, however, as he drags another conversion wide. He's been much better with ball in hand today than with the boot.

It looked like it was a deserved red card for Vunipola. A shoulder to the head is going to get you sent off.

Things happen quickly and there are sometimes mitigations. It all happens very quickly but at the end of the day that is a red card and it could mean we don't see him at the World Cup.
