    Donal Lenihan
Former Ireland lock on RTE Sport

Both sets of players are finding the ball very difficult to control at the moment.

It's just gotten very scrappy, it has the real feel of the last game before the World Cup.

They can be very difficult games and we've seen this over the years but you just have to put the thought of what's happening in two weeks time out of your head and just focus on what is in front of you.

But Samoa disrupt the line out and manage to clear.

This has been an error-riddled half from both sides. Not a classic.

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Ireland win the penalty and kick or the corner.

This would be a nice end to the half.

  4. 'Both sides trying to utilise kick-chase in tricky conditions'published at 20:19 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

With the wet conditions tonight both sides are putting in quite a lot of high kicks with a pressure chase to keep the back three on their toes.

The ball is greasy and there have been a couple of times Samoa have made a line-break and they would be better keeping the ball in hand rather than trying to keep it alive.

Both sides have made a few handling errors which is hardly surprising. You have to be sensible and patient when it comes to retaining the ball in these conditions.

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Caelan Doris is a big fella and he's so close to touching down after charging down a clearance kick.

He just ran out of room as he dived for the ball. On a dry night that could have been another try for Ireland.

We're half an hour in and Jimmy O'Brien's try and Jack Crowley's conversion are the only points on the board so far.

  7. Postpublished at 20:14 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Jimmy O'Brien collects a kick but is smashed back to Dublin by a huge hit and he knocks the ball on.

Manu charges forward and finds a gap, but he's the next to spill the ball and Ireland have the scrum on their own 22.

On Jacob Stockdale watch and his last audition to make the squad, I'm afraid to say he's barely touched the ball.

Very much on the periphery so far, but there's still plenty of time to make an impact.

This is exactly what Andy Farrell wanted to avoid (although it's always such a risk with these warm-up games).

It was a big night for Cian Healy, who moved clear in third for most Ireland caps with his 125th.

However, the big prop looked in a great deal of discomfort as he was helped off the field and his World Cup chances are immediately placed in doubt.

It looked to be his calf that was giving him bother. Irish fans can only hope for a positive update over the next 24 hours.

  10. Replacementpublished at 20:08 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Cian Healy is being helped off the pitch after hurting his calf in a scrum.

    This is a big concern.

Jeremy Loughman is coming on, but nobody wants to see this with the World Cup around the corner.

  11. Postpublished at 20:05 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Mack Hansen is almost away off a line out but Tom Stewart is pinged for a forward pass.

Not sure about that one but back we go.

  12. 'Farrell getting the test he has been waiting for'published at 20:04 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Samoa are certainly going to give Ireland a game - they are getting stuck in and playing with intensity, which is exactly what Andy Farrell has been waiting for to challenge this squad ahead of the World Cup.

Samoa will certainly give them a physical game and they are defending well and have shown good discipline, particularly with the lineout maul which is not an easy thing to defend against.

They try but the Samoan defence holds firm.

Ireland move it through the hands but Mack Hansen is deemed to be in touch and now Samoa can clear.

  14. Postpublished at 20:01 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

Jack Crowley sends a beautiful kick right into the corner as Ireland win the penalty.

    Time for the rolling maul?

  15. Clinical from Ireland - Lenihanpublished at 20:00 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 7-0 Samoa

    Donal Lenihan

    That was clinical!

A pre-rehearsed move but Jack Crowley scanning the field, he saw the space, the kick was executed perfectly. Mack Hansen did really well, he knew he wasn't going to make it but had the awareness and the support of Jimmy O'Brien.

That was an absolutely pin-point kick from Crowley and every time Mack Hansen gets the ball in hand he makes the right decision.

The problem for Samoa is that they've only played ten tests since the last World Cup and only one of those have been against a tier one nation.

But they completely fluff the line out and Ireland manage to clear. That was a real chance to work something after Lima Sopoaga's kick put them in a brilliant position.

  17. Postpublished at 19:58 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

Caelan Doris concedes a soft penalty for straying offside at the breakdown.

Samoa now have a line out deep, deep in the Irish half. Can they hit back?

  18. try

Converted try - Ireland 7-0 Samoapublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Jimmy O'Brien (9 mins)

Brilliant from Jack Crowley. He spots Mack Hansen in space out wide and finds his winger with a cross-field kick.

Hansen doesn't have the legs but Jimmy O'Brien is on his shoulder and is able to touch down.

Lovely, lovely stuff. Crowley adds the extras for good measure.

  19. 'Samoa will seek to slow down Ireland's ruck speed'published at 19:53 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

    Philippa Tuttiett
Former Wales international on Amazon Prime

Samoa are committing quite a lot of numbers to the breakdown as they look to counter rucks and down Ireland's ruck speed. Great intensity from them so far.

It has worked well so far and is creating issues for Ireland especially in these wet, slippery conditions.

However, they'll have to be careful about over-committing because it will leave them exposed elsewhere.

  20. Close!published at 19:53 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

    Samoa go close!

Fidow looks to barrel over in the corner but Conor Murray and Stuart McCloskey manage to power him into touch.

Great defending on the cover, but that was a let off.
