    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

This is more like basketball than rugby.

There's three handling errors, Mack Hansen has a kick charged down and it results in Jimmy O'Brien spilling the ball in his own 22 and Samoa will have the scrum.

    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

Oh dear, Ed Fidow calls the mark but scuffs his clearance and Ireland now have the throw deep in the Samoan half.

Iain Henderson goes for it but it slips from his grasp, and now Samoa spill it as they look to break.

It went backwards and Tom Stewart concedes the penalty as he looks to get his hands on the ball.

    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

Ireland go wide out the back and Mack Hansen is chopped down as he spots a gap.

Jack Crowley dinks one into the corner and Samoa have the line out close to their own line.

They manage to clear and now Ireland will have the throw on halfway.

    Ireland 0-0 Samoa

Samoa gather the kick-off deep in their own half and clear high into the Bayonne night.

Tumua Manu goes to collect but knocks it on. That could be a feature tonight in the wet conditions.

Ireland have the scrum just inside the Samoan half.

There's been mixed results for the home nations in the other final warm-up matches.

England lost to Fiji for the first time ever and slumped to a fifth defeat in six games as their Rugby World Cup preparations ended with another blow.

It's been a tough summer for Steve Borthwick.

Scotland, who are in the same World Cup pool as Ireland, fought back to defeat Georgia 33-6.

By the time Ireland head coach Andy Farrell names his World Cup squad in Dublin on Sunday afternoon, it will have been 10 weeks since he assembled a 42-man training panel to begin preparations for the tournament in France.

With an extended window under Farrell's gaze in camp and Tests against Italy and England, players have been given ample opportunity to prove their worth, but there is still one final chance for them to ensure they snag a seat on the plane in Saturday's final warm-up game against Samoa.

While Farrell cut five players from his group last week, six of the current 39 will suffer heartache 24 hours earlier than planned with the coach's news conference brought forward from Monday.

Iain Henderson says the Ireland squad can cope with lingering nerves ahead of the announcement on Sunday of the 33 players to travel to the World Cup.

Ireland face Samoa in Bayonne on Saturday in their final warm-up match, offering a final chance to impress.

"A lot of players have been here before in this scenario," said Henderson.

"That anxiety is obviously stressful enough for players but nothing players aren't used to in terms of stress in a professional rugby environment."

He added: "Selections for cup finals, tours, Six Nations - obviously this one carries a slightly different weight but we're a really tight-knit group, the guys who are feeling probably the worst about it are probably the best supported."

It'll be all-white on the night.

It's a debut for Ireland's alternate kit for the World Cup. What do you think of it?

Also, still not convinced by the names on shirts.

No injuries and, given recent events, no red cards.

That will be the message from Andy Farrell as Ireland get ready to embark on the World Cup.

On the injury front, Ireland head coach Farrell says he expects injured hooker Dan Sheehan to regain his fitness in time for the Rugby World Cup.

Sheehan sprained his foot during Ireland's win over England last Saturday.

A report suggested the Leinster forward, 26, could miss up to eight weeks, but Farrell says the knock is "better than expected".

"He has a sprain in his foot, better than expected, [and] should be fit for the World Cup," said Farrell.

When asked if Sheehan will be fit in time to feature in Ireland's tournament opener against Romania on 9 September, Farrell added: "We'll see how he progresses over the coming weeks but, as I said, with all injuries you see how they develop over the period of time.

"We expect him to be fit for the World Cup."

The World Cup is just around the corner and this is who Ireland will face in Pool B.

    Romania (9 Sep, Bordeaux)

    Tonga (16 Sep, Nantes)

    South Africa (23 Sep, Saint-Denis)

    Scotland (7 Oct, Saint Denis)

If Andy Farrell's men negotiate the pool stages, then the simple task of New Zealand or France await in the knockout stages. Yikes!

  15. 'Rugby gods give Stockdale one last shot'published at 19:21 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

This is a massive chance for Jacob Stockdale to throw his name back into the mix ahead of Andy Farrell's squad announcement tomorrow.

When Stockdale's name didn't appear among the matchday 23 when Ireland announced tonight's team on Thursday, the consensus was that Stockdale's race was run regarding World Cup selection.

But the rugby gods clearly feel Stockdale deserves one last shot.

Having been handed his first cap in two years for the Italy Test earlier this month, the Ulster wing clearly didn't move Farrell enough to earn inclusion against England, or indeed tonight.

But a "niggle" to Keith Earls means Stockdale will line up alongside Ulster team-mates Iain Henderson, Stuart McCloskey and Tom Stewart, who is making his full debut this evening.

After the England game, Earls was all anyone was talking about after he marked his 100th cap with a try. Stockdale needs to make a similar impression in Bayonne to ensure he's back on the plane to France next week.

There's been a late change for Ireland as Jacob Stockdale has been drafted into the starting team in place of the injured Keith Earls.

Earls, who won his 100th cap against England, has been struggling with "a niggle" and will sit out the final warm-up.

Ulster hooker Tom Stewart will make his first Test start for Ireland after being named in the team to face Samoa in the final World Cup warm-up game.

Stewart, 22, earned his debut as a replacement in the win over Italy in Dublin earlier this month.

Ulster team-mates Iain Henderson and Stuart McCloskey also start, with Henderson named captain.

There are a couple of familiar names on the Samoa bench if you are a fan of Irish rugby, such as former Ulster fly-half Christian Leali'ifano and Leinster prop Michael Ala'alatoa.

Ireland: O'Brien; Hansen, Henshaw, McCloskey, Stockdale; Crowley, Murray; Healy, Stewart, Bealham, Henderson (capt), Beirne, Baird, Van der Flier, Doris.

Replacements: Herring, Loughman, O'Toole, Ryan, O'Mahony, Casey, Byrne, Ringrose.

Samoa: Paia'aua; Fidow, Seuteni, Manu, Ah Wong; Sopoaga, Taumateine; J Lay, Lam, Alo-Emile; Vui (co-capt), McFarland; Seu, Lee, Luatua.

    Replacements: Malolo, J Lay, Ala'alatoa (co-capt), Fai'ilagi, Taufua, Enari, Leali'ifano, Foma'i.
