  1. 'We are shocked to win'published at 21:19 Greenwich Mean Time 16 December 2018

Netball captain Ama Agbeze was delighted with England's Team of the Year nod: "As you can tell we're a bit shocked, surprised and happy!"

"It's been a very long journey. Billie Jean-King said you stand on the shoulders of those who went before you and we're very tall girls and we've been standing on a lot of shoulders.

"It's taken years and years and we've never won a gold medal at any world event and this is the first time that netball has managed to a gold medal.

"We hope in the coming years the Netball World Cup will be gracing the stage as well."

Martin Dolce: Well done Geraint Thomas! Well deserved!

Harry Mills: Would've loved for Kane to have won it, thought Hamilton should've though, 5 F1 world titles, hasn't received the recognition he's deserved in my opinion.

More from Spoty winner Geraint Thomas:

"I'd like to thank my wife, she deserves this just as much. I'm really lucky to have her and my family.

"As a bike rider, I was always focused on myself, but hearing stories like Tyson and Billy, then seeing kids on their bikes back home, you take great pride in winning this.

"It's been an amazing year for British sport and long may it continue."

I’d go for Ireland’s run to the Hockey World Cup final. Those outside of Ireland may not have known how amazing this group of young women were but within the squad the belief shone through.

They had personality and commitment in spades, stuck to their coach Graham Shaw’s brilliant game plans and held their nerve in the decisive shoot-out moments. On top of that, their fans brought colour and a whole lot of noise to the London stands.

This breakthrough moment for the team was so thrilling to witness and I will be watching their campaign to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics with great interest!

In the world of rugby, 2018 has been Ireland’s year.

A Six Nations Grand Slam was followed by a first series victory in Australia for 39 years, before the men in green rounded off a stellar 12 months with a win over the mighty All Blacks in Dublin. The task now is to go one better in 2019…
