Now they are acknowledging the feats of some ‘alternative Sports Personalities.’ One of those is Mavis Patterson, who became the oldest woman to cycle the 960 miles (1,540km) from Land’s End to John O’Groats in just 23 days. Khadijah Mellah is another one - she was the first hijab-wearing jockey to win a race in Britain when triumphing in the Magnolia Cup. Some inspiring achievements!

Now it's a quick look at skateboarding sensation Sky Brown, who is just 11 years old but already has a bronze World Championship medal to her name.

She was in the running for the Young Sports Personality of the Year, which was eventually awarded to boxer Caroline Dubois.

But Sky is basically the coolest kid ever. She was doing tricks on the red carpet earlier and speaking to snowboarder Jenny Jones, who follows her on Instagram.

    BBC One

Dina Asher-Smith speaking to BBC One: "From the video, you can probably tell that none of us probably expected it. I started when I was 8 years old, each year I just want to get faster and see what happens. So far that was led to some pretty cool things but we just want to keep going.

"It still makes me a bit emotional. My parents have been fantastic, they've been so supportive and selfless since I've been really young. For my parents to be there, and my mum to run after me and say she was really proud really got to me.

"We just want to get faster, better and find small ways to get a little bit quicker."

On getting a day off on Christmas Day: "We're still in negotiations!"
