    England's cricket hero Ben Stokes told earlier of his pride to be on the six-strong Sports Personailty shortlist.

    "Just to be nominated is something special in itself," said the 28-year-old who helped his side to a first Cricket World Cup triumph and then made a remarkable unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes Test triumph against Australia at Headingley.

    "This awards night is to celebrate sport at the end of the year. I think everyone here has managed to do amazing things. It’s great to be here representing cricket. The sport I chose to do and love.

    "It was an awesome year, not just for myself but for the rest of the team."

    "From playing sport, I’ve got a bit of spirit and fight and my spirit is to find a cure for MND. My foundation was raised nearly £5 million, the recognition and support has been staggering.

    "Sport has taught me to enjoy myself because you don’t know what’s next so tonight will be pretty special.
